Title: Sustained
Series: The Legal Briefs, #2
Author: Emma Chase
Release date: 24th August, 2015
Cliffhanger: No

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Sustained is the second novel in The Legal Briefs series, and standalone follow up to its brilliant predecessor; Overruled.

It guarantees to entertain readers with its trademark Emma Chase laugh out loud-tongue-in-cheek humour, a straight talking hero, a wonderful supporting cast of characters, an angst filled plot, and last but not least; sexual tension that promises to singe your page-turning-fingers.

The evidence:

Exhibit A.

Jake Becker, successful defence attorney with penchant for discipline. He works hards and plays harder. His regimented, no nonsense approach is reflective in both his work and social life. He knows what he wants, gets it and doesn't suffer fools gladly in the process.

"Do it right, or don't bother."

Exhibit B.

Twenty-six year old, Chelsea McQuaid and her brood of adorable nieces and nephews. Legal guardian to her late brother's six orphaned children, Chelsea turns to Jake for his legal aid. As the hilarity ensues, Jake's legal obligations soon become more personal and the help he offers more that of friend than legal counsel. As much as he may not like or want distractions in his life, the McQuaid's soon take up a big part of it.

“Is there something wrong with her?” I ask.

“No,” Chelsea answers, sounding slightly affronted. “There’s nothing wrong with Regan. She’s two.”

Exhibit C.

The angst. The delicious, rub-your-hands-together-glee-angst. As much as Chelsea brings out his (I dare say) nurturing side, it's almost instinct for him to want to help her. He also plain old wants her and the familiarity in their friendship leads to much more.

Like most Emma Chase heroes, Jake is not immune from his epic episode of douchebaggery. But ever the overachiever, he succeeds in redeeming himself in an admirable fashion.

In summary, Emma Chase's Sustained is nothing short of a stellar read and delivered on all accounts. The Legal Briefs series has certainly made a fan in me and the wait for the next instalment, Appealed commences.

I rest my case.
