Berkley Bookmas: A Cuban holiday recipe from Chanel Cleeton

Happy Holidays, readers! Smokin' Hot Book Blog is thrilled to take part in Berkley's Bookmas celebration this year! Chanel Cleeton is sharing her family holiday traditions and a special Cuban holiday recipe for us! Berkley Bookmas is chock full of exclusive content from authors like exclusive excerpts, deleted scenes, author recipes and more! Check out the calendar of events below:

One of my favorite holiday traditions is celebrating Noche Buena. In the Cuban culture, Christmas Eve is the night where we have our big meal, and throughout my childhood, my family would celebrate the evening with a pig roast and some of my favorite dishes like black beans and rice, yucca, flan, and more. The pig roasts in either a pit or a wooden box with coals on top of a grate all day long, and everyone gathers in the backyard, listening to music, relaxing and celebrating while the meal cooks. It’s a really fun way to pass the day and in Florida the weather is usually perfect for spending it outside. Once the pig is ready and the other food is cooked, the party goes on into late hours of the night (or early hours of the morning). While roasting a whole pig can be a daunting endeavor, if you want to celebrate Noche Buena in Cuban style, here’s my favorite family recipe for black beans and rice that’s the perfect side to any Christmas Eve dinner.

Black Beans & Rice Recipe

•1 15.5 oz. can Goya Black Beans

•2 tbl. olive oil

•1 tbl. white cooking wine

•2 minced cloves of garlic

•1 tsp. oregano

•1 bay leaf

•3/4 cup of water

•1 tsp. cumin

•1/2 cup onion, finely chopped

•1/4 cup green pepper, finely chopped

•1/4 tsp. Goya Adobo seasoning

•Salt

•Pepper

•Cilantro

•2 cups cooked long grain white rice

Directions:

Place the beans and the water in a small to medium sized saucepan and cook over low to medium heat until warm. Add oil, cooking wine, garlic, oregano, bay leaf, cumin, onion, green pepper, and Adobo to the beans and mix. Bring to a boil. Lower heat and cook on low for one hour. Check regularly to make sure it doesn’t foam/bubble over. Serve over two cups of cooked long grain white rice (either according to package instructions in saucepan or in rice cooker). Season with salt and pepper to taste when serving. Can top with cilantro.

Chanel Cleeton's upcoming historical fiction will be published February 6, 2018!

About the book:

After the death of her beloved grandmother, a Cuban-American woman travels to Havana, where she discovers the roots of her identity--and unearths a family secret hidden since the revolution...

Havana, 1958. The daughter of a sugar baron, nineteen-year-old Elisa Perez is part of Cuba's high society, where she is largely sheltered from the country's growing political unrest--until she embarks on a clandestine affair with a passionate revolutionary...

Miami, 2017. Freelance writer Marisol Ferrera grew up hearing romantic stories of Cuba from her late grandmother Elisa, who was forced to flee with her family during the revolution. Elisa's last wish was for Marisol to scatter her ashes in the country of her birth.

Arriving in Havana, Marisol comes face-to-face with the contrast of Cuba's tropical, timeless beauty and its perilous political climate. When more family history comes to light and Marisol finds herself attracted to a man with secrets of his own, she'll need the lessons of her grandmother's past to help her understand the true meaning of courage.

Release Blitz with Giveaway: Always You by Denise Grover Swank

Title: ALWAYS YOU
Author: Denise Grover Swank
Series: Bachelor Brotherhood #3
Publication Date: November 28, 2017
Publisher: Forever

"Swank's fluffy, feel-good storytelling proclaims the primacy of love as a force to which everyone should surrender-the bachelors destined to star in future installments haven't got a chance." --- Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Only You

First love is better the second time around.

Matt Osborn had no idea coaching his five-year-old nephew's soccer team would get him so much attention from the mothers-attention he doesn't want now that he's given up on love and having a family of his own. Yep, Matt's the last of his bachelor buddies, and plans on staying that way. That is, until he finds himself face-to-face with the woman who broke his heart.

Single mom Anna paused her life in England to help her father recover from an illness. She can't afford complications, and too-hot-for-his-own-good Matt Osborn-her almost former fiancé-is definitely a complication. He's a reminder of what might have been-or should have been. That irresistible pull between them isn't over. Not even close. But if she's not careful, she'll break both their hearts . . . again.

EXCERPT

What would make her happy was standing right in front of her, and she was struggling to remember why this was a bad idea. “I have an appointment at one,” she said. “Another assisted living center tour. With the friend you recommended.”

“We can work around it.”

She should turn him down. She knew she should, so why was she saying, “Okay.”

He smiled, looking more like good-natured Coach Matt and not Alpha Male Matt, the man she’d gotten to know well in her bed twelve years ago.

Damned if she didn’t want Alpha Matt.

He was less than two feet from her, watching her with an intensity that suggested he knew he was making her squirm and loving every minute of it.

“Great,” Matt said, as though he hadn’t made the air temperature rise twenty degrees just from the timbre of his voice. “If you want, Toby can stay with us when you go to your appointment, and then we’ll all go after you’re done.”

“Yeah.” It was a great plan, but standing this close to him made her nervous. She didn’t trust herself to walk out the door without doing something foolish, like kiss him, because right now that seemed like a real possibility. “I should go.” She took a step back and lost her footing.

Matt reached for her, snaking an arm around her back and pulling her upright against him.

Anna sucked in a breath at the contact. Her hands rested on his chest, and she realized it was just as solid as she’d remembered. Shivers ran up her arms and she found herself molding her body to his.

His hand stayed in place on her back, pulling her even closer.

She knew she should back away, but she wanted this, wanted him, and that was dangerous. She was a mother now. Her son had to come first.

“I can’t stay, Matt,” she said again, feeling like a broken record, but she had to make sure he didn’t feel deceived by her again. He deserved full honesty. “I have to think about Toby. I can’t hurt him.”

He looked surprised. “Anna, I would never willingly hurt Toby.”

“But this…us…if we do this…” Did she confess her son’s deepest desire for a father to love him and her worry that this would only confuse him? Was it her secret to tell? “I have to think about Toby. And Ethan.”

“We’re not going to hurt them, Anna.”

“We might. If we get too close.” I might get hurt if we get too close.

Too late for that…

He kept his hand on her back, and lifted the other to the side of her neck. He didn’t answer, at least not with words. He lowered his face, his lips gently brushing hers.

Her breath caught. His touch was like a jolt of electricity to her heart, bringing her back to life.

Release Blitz with Giveaway: Undercover Attraction by Katee Robert

Title: UNDERCOVER ATTRACTION
Author: Katee Robert
Publication Date: November 28, 2017
Series: O’Malleys
Publisher: Forever

"A worthy addition to a sexy series." -- Publishers Weekly

SUMMARY

Scandal. Wealth. Power. Seduction. Welcome to the world of the O'Malleys.

Ex-cop Charlotte Finch used to think there was a clear line between right and wrong. Then her fellow officers betrayed her, and the world is no longer so black and white. Especially when it's Aiden O'Malley, one of the most dangerous men in Boston, who offers her a chance for justice. The only catch: she'll have to pretend to be his fiancée for his plan to work.

Aiden can't afford to let anyone see the man behind the mask. To run the O'Malley empire, he has to be cool and controlled at all times. But the moment he meets Charlie, they're playing with fire. Her slightest touch is enough to send him over the edge. At first their "engagement" was a way to eliminate his enemies. Now he'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe-- even if he has to destroy his own family to do it.

EXCERPT

“Come on.” Aidan stepped back and took her hand. “I have something to show you.”

He led the way up the back stairs and through a door she hadn’t explored yet. Charlie’s breath caught in her throat at the sight of candles flickering on a table laid out with a bottle of wine, two glasses, and a whole spread of Chinese takeout.

She let go of his hand and wandered over to peer into the boxes. “How did you know that crispy pork belly was my favorite?” Just like that, the pieces clicked together. She snapped her fingers. “You had your sister feel me out?” She’d thought Kiera had been asking about her favorite food so they could pick a local place next time they ventured out of the house. “Shady. Very shady.”

“I am a mob boss, after all.” He came around the table and poured them both a glass of wine. “I have it on good authority that this cab pairs well with Chinese takeout.”

“How classy of you.” It was like stepping into another realm of existence as she sat down and accepted the glass of wine while he filled two plates. When Aiden had said that he wanted a dinner date with her, she’d assumed that meant dressing to the nines and going out somewhere fancy. She said as much.

He snorted. “Eating out always serves a purpose. Either you’re making a point, or ensuring you’re seen by someone specific, or conducting a business meeting. We’ve been making points and playing parts since we met. I’d like to try something new—having a relaxing conversation. Just me and you, Aiden and Charlie, not the leader of the O’Malley clan and the former-cop-turned-fake-fiancée.”

“Do you think that’s even possible?” Such a short time together, and it was clear they both had a boatload of issues. It was easy enough to ignore when they were banging each other’s brains out or pretending to be something they weren’t, but holding down a conversation without those masks in place? She wasn’t sure it was a good idea.

Because I already like him.

SYNOPSIS

He’s one human caught in a tangled maze of theft, politics, magic, and blood. In other words, it’s just another night.
Benjamin Vecchio escaped a chaotic childhood and grew to adulthood under the protection and training of one of the Elemental world’s most feared vampire assassins. He’s traveled the world and battled immortal enemies.
But everyone has to go home sometime.
New York means new opportunities and allies for Ben and his vampire partner, Tenzin. It also means new politics and new threats. Their antiquities business is taking off, and their client list is growing. When Ben is challenged to find a painting lost since the second world war, he jumps at the chance. This job will keep him closer to home, but it might just land him in hot water with the insular clan of earth vampires who run Manhattan.
Tenzin knew the painting would be trouble before she laid eyes on it, but she can’t deny the challenge intrigues her. Human laws mean little to a vampire with a few millennia behind her, and Tenzin misses the rush of taking what isn’t hers.
But nothing is more dangerous than a human with half the story, and Ben and Tenzin might end up risking their reputations and their lives before they escape the Midnight Labyrinth.

REVIEW

Midnight Labyrinth (Elemental Legacy, #4)Midnight Labyrinth by Elizabeth Hunter
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Title: Midnight Labyrinth
Series: Elemental Legacy #4
Author: Elizabeth Hunter
Release date: November 7, 2017
Cliffhanger: No

After reading the first two books in the Elemental Mystery series , I was already familiar with Ben and Tenzin.
However, Ben was still a young boy, and things have changed since I read them. I'm thinking that missing those last two books, and the three novellas preceding Midnight Labyrinth didn't do me any favors. I'm sure now that I was missing some important nuances between the main characters. The sign up for this was misleading in telling me this was (and I quote) "the first book in an all-new contemporary fantasy series by Elizabeth Hunter". I was expecting some sort of romance. A slow burn, or even just a hint that's only introduced in their first full length. What I got a whole heap of platonic friendship laced with an abrupt drunken declaration of deeper feelings that didn't fit or feel natural.

The author states on her website that the two of them ending up together is not out of the question. But if I'm to believe in a possible relationship later, should I not have seen some real clues leading up to that? Some angst? The way their feelings were presented had me thoroughly confused.

For example, more than one person implied to Ben that his feelings went far beyond platonic. I saw absolutely nothing in his thoughts or actions to lead me to believe that. I need to be shown, not told. Tenzin's makeover suddenly filling him with a surge of passionate attraction and lust was very abrupt. What I did see was his thoughts and emotions towards his girlfriend. Immediately after passionately declaring to Tenzin that he wanted to be alone with her, he jumps in bed with the girlfriend. Did that bother Tenzin? Not. One. Bit. The entire matter is balled up, thrown aside, and ignored like it never even happened. Honestly, I would have been MUCH happier to take a possible romance entirely out of the equation.

Putting the relationship dynamic aside, let's address the mystery, the real story here.

Ben and Tenzin are business partners and long-time friends. Well, not so long for Tenzin, considering she's a vamp who's lived several millenniums, and he's a human whose life is like the blink of an eye to her. So...keep in mind that time is relative with them. Ben entered the vampire world through his uncle Gio who raised him, and though he remains a part of that world, has no desire to lose his humanity. He's travelled the world and been on grand adventures that most could only dream of. The problem is, you can't see what he's seen without gaining an enemy or two. And if you upset a powerful elemental vampire upset, there's going to be hell to pay.

Tenzin was a very intriguing and complex character. Her knowledge of human behavior, and overall intelligence is truly unparalleled. Living so long, she's seen every facet of beauty and darkness that the world has to offer. So when she opens her mouth to give advice, you can count on having real wisdom gifted to you. On the other hand, she's hilariously inept at modern society. Or else, she just doesn't care to conform to polite or banal chit chat. She's blunt, socially awkward, and fiercely loyal to those small few who make her inner circle. Her people. There's a ruthless side to her that cannot be ignored, but in the end, you can't help feeling a little bit in awe of her.

Ben and Tenzin are both similar in that they are both drawn to the excitement of adventure. Discovering things long ago lost, and the thrill that surrounds the chase. In this story, they're drawn into a mystery revolving around a set of paintings: The Midnight Labyrinth, The Twilight, and Dawn Labyrinth. Two of the three are on display at the museum, but the third has disappeared after being stolen during the war. The story immediately pulls Ben in, and playing hero is an added bonus. However, things are not quite what they appear. Deceptions have been plotted, and they need to stay on their guard in order to pull off the heist he feels will restore peace to the artist's family.

My feelings were that it was very slow going in the first half, and I felt like I was waiting for something of consequence to happen. But when the action finally kicked forward in the last 30-40%, I had no complaints. The secondary characters Gavin and Chloe had a fantastic sub-plot that had me completely hooked. Strangely, it was almost like this felt like their book more than Ben and Tenzin's. They stole the show so much that I actually got disappointed when their scenes would end. I wish I could have felt the same excitement for the two main characters, but there was a clear disconnect somewhere.

Midnight Labyrinth had its moments of action and humor that undoubtedly kept me entertained. As always, the characters were well-developed and original, and that's why I'll continue to read her stories. But I just couldn't say that I enjoyed it enough to finish off the series with the final book. There was an open ending, a to be continued type of situation. So there's no need to proceed with caution if you don't care to be left hanging off the dreaded cliff.
