Christie's review: The Score by Elle Kennedy

27252717

Title:The Score
Series: Off-Campus #3
Author: Nancy Haviland
Release Date: January 11, 2016
Rating:5 stars
Cliffhanger: No

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she's going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

This series for me has been nothing short of magic. And I don't throw out those words lightly. I've gone through so many NA books that were passable, but just didn't have anything special to differentiate them from any of the others in the genre. What makes this series so great is that every single book has been memorable enough to land them on my favorites shelf. They're packed with flawless banter, and a genuine quality you find in not only the romance, but the friendships between the entire group of characters. The wittiness between Garrett, Logan, Dean and Tucker has been a bromance made in heaven. They love to bust each other's balls on a daily basis and that makes me one happy reader to be able to get a front seat for the show. I've become so attached to this group, it almost feels like coming home when I get to revisit them again with in every new story.

I've been waiting with bated breath for Dean's book. The college manwhore athlete is not a new concept, yet I had every faith that Elle Kennedy would infuse life right back into it and put her own original stamp on it. And let me set your fears aside right now, she once again has delivered a well executed story. The manwhore hero is not always a winning character for me, but Dean completely won me over-with one cocky wink and glimpse of his shameless swagger, I was charmed. He's just so completely over-the-top sinfully sexy and confident, you can't help but fall for his shamefulness. But the cherry on top of the manwhore cupcake was his complete and utter reform, and his surprisingly emotional path to becoming a better man.

Dean has always been portrayed as sex obsessed and simply put: only out for physical pleasure. His own, and any girl who's willing to partake with him. He's the jokester, the one who doesn't take life too seriously. People tend to underestimate him. But we get to see a whole other side to him in The Score, and though he had his faults, he also had some hidden facets that will be sure to surprise you. His sweetness was just adorable as he was discovering his feelings for Allie were rooting deeper than he had anticipated. And yeah, he had that dirty side to him just as you'd expect and It. Was. Good.

"Get over yourself," I mutter. "I'd be wet if any guy was rubbing up against me."
"Bull. Fucking. Shit." His thumb brushes my clit. I almost fall over.
"It's me. You want me.

Allie was a fantastic heroine. She turned out to be perfectly paired with Dean in several ways. She was adventurous, and blunt. She was bold and strong, and refused to accept being Dean's temporary plaything. I loved seeing her put him in his place and cut his confidence down a size or two.

"My face? Turn-on. Chest? Turn-on. I'd roll over and show you my ass, but we both know the answer will be 'turn-on' so I'll skip that one. Dick? Turn the fuck on. And then we get to the non-physical awesomeness that is Dean."
"Speaking in the third person? Not a turn-on."

She demanded respect and she gave it back in return when he let her in and showed her the side of himself that no one else gets to see. It all started with an embarrassing one night stand, and Allie vows to move on and forget it ever happened. She's still in recovery mode from her recent break up with her long time boyfriend. While Dean was a good time, he's not boyfriend material. And she's not a casual sex type of girl.

Unfortunately for her, Dean develops a surprising obsession for her since that night and they're both drifting in uncharted territory. The man who is used to getting everything he's ever wanted suddenly has a hunger that can't be quenched. And Allie? She's just trying to mend her broken heart, not break it all over again.

They lead each other on a merry chase that will leave you spellbound. I just can't express the hilarity, the explosive chemistry, and the poignant levels that this book attains. My smiles were too many to count. They both had hurdles to overcome, growing to do, and path to get there was not an easy one. None of the drama felt overdone or unnecessary however. Everything had a purpose and was explored with sensitivity. This book is the total package, I couldn't give it less than five enthusiastic stars. Obviously I highly recommend this one, but don't take my word for it. Go march your fingers to that Amazon one-click button on release day and judge for yourself. The entertainment value you'll find in this one is priceless.

BLOG TOUR: Sweet Soul (Sweet Home, #4; Carillo Boys, #3) by Tillie Cole

Sweet Soul (Sweet Home, #4; Carillo Boys, #3)

Title: Sweet Soul #4
Series: Can be read as a standalone
Author: Tillie Cole
Release Date: December 15, 2015
Rating: 4 stars
Cliffhanger:. No
One shy lost soul.
One silent lonely heart.
One love to save them both.

Life has never been easy for twenty-year-old Levi Carillo. The youngest of the Carillo boys, Levi is nothing like his older brothers. He isn’t dark in looks or intimidating to everyone he meets. In fact, he’s quite the opposite. Haunted by a crippling shyness and the tragic events of his past, Levi spends his days with his head buried in his books, or training hard for his college football team. Too timid to talk to girls, Levi stays as far away as possible and completely on his own… until he saves the life of a troubled pretty blonde, a troubled pretty blonde that might just be the exception to his rule.

Elsie Hall is homeless. Or at least that’s all anyone ever sees. Everyday is a fight for survival on the cold streets of Seattle, everyday a struggle to find food and keep warm. Alone in life—a life that’s dangerous and cruel—her will to keep going is an ever-losing battle. In her world of silence, Elsie has given up hope that her life will contain anything but constant struggle and pain… until the beautiful boy she has severely wronged comes to her rescue at precisely the right time.

New Adult novel—contains sexual situations and mature topics. Suited for ages 18 and up.

Moving my hand, I ran my fingers over the brown beads. “Why do you hold these, Mamma? You always have them with you. Right now, you’re clutching them real tight.”
Mamma sighed and brought the rosary to her chest. “I use them to pray to Mother Mary. She gives me strength, mia luna. I pray to her for strength.” Mamma’s voice cracked again and I tried to think hard. I tried to think why she needed strength.
Blinking, a thought came to me and I asked, “Is it Austin and Axel? Do you pray for them? Because of the Heighters?”
Mamma sighed and ran her finger down my cheek. “Always, mia luna. I always pray for them. For what they do each night for that gang.”
I shook my head, knowing there was something else. “But what—”
“Shh,” Mamma whispered. She then held up the rosary and placed it in my hand. She curled her hand around mine and pressed the beads into my palm. “Levi, you take these now. I want you to have these. I want you to keep them for strength. For the strength you will need someday soon.”
I frowned and shook my head. “No, Mamma. They’re yours. I’m strong with you around. I don’t need these.”
Mamma’s head dropped, and she took a deep breath.
“Mamma?” I questioned. She was acting real strange.
Mamma wiped her cheeks and a sad smile spread on her lips. “Va bene, mia luna. I’ll keep them for now. Grazie. Always thinking of your mamma. But one day, when… when I’m not here, you keep these with you. I want you to remember that these are yours. You are not your brothers, Levi. You are kind and shy, not hard and boisterous, ready to fight the world. You are my quiet baby boy. My sweet, sweet soul.”
“I’m not weak,” I pushed, hating that I wasn’t like my brothers. Axel and Austin were strong and tough. I wanted to be just like them.

Mamma pressed a kiss to my forehead. “Never, Levi. You are a Carillo boy after all. But you are different from Austin and Axel. They are alike in so many ways—hot headed and tough, hard on the outside until they let you in. You are the timid one, the gentle brother—inside and out. You are the one to carry his heart on his sleeve. You are the one who watches silently from afar and loves with all his soul. ” Mamma huffed, and said, “Whoever you end up with, my son, whoever claims your heart, will be a very special girl indeed.” Her finger stroked my cheek. “So much love, mia luna. You will love with your whole being, and it will be forever. You could not love in any other way.”

Sweet Soul is another very emotional and intense story by Tillie Cole. She has yet another time captured on the paper all of those… feels; the good, the bad, the ugly… It was, at times heart wrenching to read about yet.. I was so invested into the characters’ lives stories, in their pain and hopes and dreams that I just couldn’t stop myself from reading even though it hurt me in many ways.

Levi Carillo is different than Austin and Axel, his tough as nails big brothers. Levi’s gentle, loving… shy. He has a good, golden heart and is just not interested in things most twenty year olds are. He doesn’t party, he has never kissed a girl… He’s just a little bit lonely and broken. Missing his mother. Trying to find happiness. When he meets homeless, sick girl a little bit younger than him, his instincts and empathy kick in and he persuades Austin and Lexi to help her.

Elsie and Levi were both very complex and complicated characters.I will admit that this novel, although exceptionally sweet in some moments, left me quite open and venerable. Some subjects had hit me more than others.

"Telling stories of love, he brought to her life
A moment by his side: no pain, no strife"

This book is full of heavy issues – bullying, homelessness, suicide attempts, loneliness. Beautiful and harsh, bittersweet. Yet I loved it.

I was sad to reach the ending and say goodbye to the characters. Sweet Home series gave me many hours of blissful reading. I am not sure if I am ready to let it go.

All in all, Tillie Cole is superb writer! In my opinion every single story she’s written down is exceptional and unique in its own way. Sweet Soul is no different. I highly recommend picking it up if you are looking for a romantic story that will get you thinking about life in general, cruelty and why people hurt others. This was very rough, raw and honest love story.

”Words are the worst kind of ammunition, Levi. Physical pain fades in time, but bullets of cruelty forever penetrate the soul.”

Amazon & USA Today Best Selling Author, Tillie Cole is a Northern girl through and through. She originates from a place called Teesside on that little but awesomely sunny (okay I exaggerate) Isle called Great Britain. She was brought up surrounded by her English rose mother — a farmers daughter, her crazy Scottish father, a savagely sarcastic sister and a multitude of rescue animals and horses.

Patrycja's Review: The Air He Breathes by Brittainy C. Cherry

25564446

Title: The Air He Breathes
Series: Romance Elements #1, can be read as a standalone
Author: Brittainy C. Cherry
Release Date: September 25, 2015
Rating: 4.5 - 5 stars
Cliffhanger:. no

I was warned about Tristan Cole.

“Stay away from him,” people said.
“He’s cruel.”
“He’s cold.”
“He’s damaged.”

It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.

But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.

We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.

Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.

The Air He Breathes is perfectly written story. A story that took me on amazing journey full of feelings and emotions so real I can still feel my heart crumbling. This is one of those novels that stay with readers forever – the print it leaves on soul too strong to ever fade away. And even if the details of it will blur with time, the depth and the meaning of the story will definitely still be remembered.

That’s why Brittainy C. Cherry is one of my favorite authors – the way she can tug on my heartstrings is unmistakably beautiful and moving. She simply creates a plot and characters so broken yet real that the reading experience is so powerful you feel overwhelmed with. In the best way of course.

"The magic is in the tiny moments. The small touches, the gentle smiles, the quiet laughs. The magic is about living for today and allowing yourself to breathe and be happy. My dear boy, to love is the magic."

The Air He Breathes tells a story about two people who had just survived the loss of the loved ones. They are both broken and having a hard time dealing with the death of their soulmate.

When Elizabeth lost her husband the only thing that had the strength to pull her just a little bit of the darkness was her little daughter Emma. If not her Liz would probably have lost herself in despair.

Tristan had even less luck. His eight year old son was killed in an accident right along with his wife. Having no one to focus on Tristan completely crumbled. He became a recluse, believing he doesn’t deserve to have people love him…

Due to serendipity Tristan moved into house next door to Elizabeth. Together they learn how to let go, how to heal and feel free again – but it’s not pretty.

"Her soul was scarred, and mine was burned.

But when we were together, the hurting hurt a little less. When we were together, the past wasn’t as painful to take in. When we were together, I never for a second felt alone.."

On the pages of The Air He Breathes you can find everything what makes a story perfect - from the heartbreak to the silly dose of humor, from sensual and intense romance and intimacy to very well pictured secondary characters and friendship.

This book exceed my expectations - it was angstier and sexier that I thought was possible. It had as well the most moving and touching plotline - it simply left me breathless. It teaches that there is beauty in every tragedy and that love comes with loss yet still a single moment of happiness is worth the pain.

Reasuming, Brittainy C. Cherry yet again nailed it! I think she only gets better and better at creating realistic, beautiful and unique plotlines. I cannot wait to read her next book, because even right now I’m pretty sure it would be the bomb.
