Patrycja's Review: Right Kind of Wrong by Chelsea Fine

20455344

Title: Right Kind of Wrong
Series: Finding Fate #3
Author: Chelsea Fine
Release Date: September 2, 2014
Rating: 4 stars
Cliffhanger:. No

Sometimes wrong can feel oh so right . . .

Jenna Lacombe needs complete control, whether it’s in the streets . . . or between the sheets. So when she sets out on a solo road trip to visit her family in New Orleans, she’s beyond annoyed that the infuriatingly sexy Jack Oliver wants to hitch a ride with her. Ever since they shared a wild night together last year, he’s been trying to strip away her defenses one by one. He claims he’s just coming along to keep her safe-but what’s not safe for her is prolonged exposure to the tattooed hottie.

Jack can’t get Jenna out from under his skin. She makes him feel alive again after his old life nearly destroyed him-and losing her is not an option. Now Jack’s troubles are catching up to him, and he’s forced to return to his hometown in Louisiana. But when his secrets put them both in harm’s way, Jenna will have to figure out how far she’s willing to let love in . . . and how much she already has.

Jenna is hard core chick. Sexy, tattooed, smart and witty, without any reservations. She’s open minded, independent control freak. She needs control to survive. She has a life plan, and there is no place for love in her life. Love is something you can’t control, so she doesn’t want to fall for any man, fearing that it will destroy her dreams.

"I have a plan for my life, my future. A good plan. A solid plan. I’m going to graduate college. I’m going to sell my sculptures and promote my artwork until I raise enough money to open an art gallery. Then I’m going to showcase artwork until I have enough money to buy myself a home. And a car. And health insurance. And maybe then I’ll get a small pet. Like a black car or a little Pig."

Jack is Jenna’s friend, a friend she spent one amazing night with. He’s also totally, completely and utterly in love with her. So when the chance came up for them to go on a road trip to New Orleans together, Jack took it.

"I’m just a bloody guy in a bathroom waiting for the girl of my dreams to realize that she’s in love with me. She’s everything I’ve ever wanted. And she won’t let me love her..."

In Right Kind of Wrong, we have a reversed situation; this time along (what a nice change!) hero is doing the chasing, while our main heroine is hiding her feelings and doing the pushing away.

“Love is the absence of control and the presence of faith. And you won’t truly be happy until you surrender to it.”

The main heroine is out of ordinary, especially when compared to other new adult female characters, while the hero is absolutely swoon worthy in ‘bad boy with golden heart’ way, and together they are just perfect! Match made in heaven. Even though Jenna’s behaviour can be off putting for some of the readers; as she’s not only stubborn as a mule and blind, but from time to time quite bitchy, I still liked her. I found her rough exterior engaging. I could connect to her reasoning and the want to be independent. I got why she was scared of falling in love, and while I didn’t exactly approve of her actions, I could swallow them and forgive her. Jack’s love for her was strong and sincere and I really did cross my fingers for them. They both deserved their happily ever after.

This couple was simply awesome! They bickered, fought and joked all the time. The love/hate relationship was freaking hot! They were both so amusing, so sexy they almost burned my ereader down. I loved them together!!

Right Kind of Wrong is third book in Finding Fate Series (you can read it as stand alone) and quite honestly the most frustrating one. The heroine can piss you off. Yet it’s still very good addition to Chelsea Fine’s work and I couldn’t not love Jenna and Jack’s story. It’s definitely heart stopping! The beautiful, electric chemistry the main characters shared made this novel really, really amazing. I could not put it down.

Eliza's Review: Assumption (Underground Kings #1) by Aurora Rose Reynolds

Assumption (Underground Kings, #1)

Title: Assumption (Underground Kings #1)
Series: (Underground Kings)
Author: Aurora Rose Reynolds
Release Date: 25th August, 2014
Rating: 3.75 "Warrior" Stars
Cliffhanger: No

 photo 49454425-994C-42FD-9465-6B20646086AA_zpstyycrsmw.jpg

Aurora Rose Reynolds knows how to serve up hot, possessive, caring men and if you think Kenton Mayson is more of the same, your right...and wrong! Kenton has a much rougher edge to him that the other Mayson Men and when pushed has no qualms in proving it.

Autumn is one of my favourite heroine's from any of the previous books, she's hard working, determined and kind of cray (in a good way). Working in a strip club, while she goes to school to become a Registered Nurse, she's involved in an dangerous incident one night. On the advice and arranging of a friend, she finds herself on a plane to the safety that is Kenton Mayson until things calm down.

When they first meet she's immediately weary of the fact that she's attracted to him and disappointed when like most others, he makes assumptions about her. Rather than clear up any misunderstandings she determines to keep herself to herself and bide her time until she can return home. There was a moment I was afraid Autumn was becoming "Woe is me" but that quickly passed.

 photo 38C38724-B1D7-4FE5-9002-04909E1FEE2B_zpsveuopchn.jpg

When they both eventually decide to give the other a chance, the mutual attraction is ignored until they ignore no more. Like the other books the intensity is there and things more quickly between the pair.

“Anything for you, babe.”

“Anything for you too. You know that, right?
"
“You’ve already given me everything.”

There are some real laugh out loud moments in this and it's a nice balance to the drama. On a whole I found it an enjoyable read. If you're after a non-offensive, steamy, cheesy & fun read, you're definitely in luck.

Christie's Review, Excerpt and Giveaway: The Hook Up by Kristen Callihan

22611920

Title:The Hook Up
Series: Game On #1
Author: Kristen Callihan
Release Date: September 8, 2014
Rating:4.5 stars
Cliffhanger: No

The rules: no kissing on the mouth, no staying the night, no telling anyone, and above all… No falling in love.

Anna Jones just wants to finish college and figure out her life. Falling for star quarterback Drew Baylor is certainly not on her to do list. Confident and charming, he lives in the limelight and is way too gorgeous for his own good. If only she could ignore his heated stares and stop thinking about doing hot and dirty things with him. Easy right?

Too bad he’s committed to making her break every rule…

Football has been good to Drew. It’s given him recognition, two National Championships, and the Heisman. But what he really craves is sexy yet prickly Anna Jones. Her cutting humor and blatant disregard for his fame turns him on like nothing else. But there’s one problem: she's shut him down. Completely.

That is until a chance encounter leads to the hottest sex of their lives, along with the possibility of something great. Unfortunately, Anna wants it to remain a hook up. Now it’s up to Drew to tempt her with more: more sex, more satisfaction, more time with him. Until she’s truly hooked. It's a good thing Drew knows all about winning.

All’s fair in love and football…Game on.

This is not a debut author, but she's new to me. Although she's written several books, they are in the historical/paranormal/steampunk genres and I don't dabble much in those. This is her first attempt at New Adult and I have to say, I was completely impressed with this book. The writing was fantastic. It was emotional, it was funny, it was gripping in a way that I was unable to set this bad boy down once I took a peek at it! You know exactly what I'm talking about, I know you do. Your curiosity is aroused so you turn to the first few pages to get a sample of the writing and before you know it, you're chapters in and promising yourself, "Just a few more pages." True story here. Looking at the cover, sorry but I wasn't too crazy about it. He looks goofy as hell! But please don't judge the book on that smarmy guy. I'm so glad I decided to try this one out.

This book has all the signs of a superior book:

#1...Un-put-down-able
#2...Freaking fire alarm steamy-don't read this in public H.O.T. (This is not your typical NA fare)
#3...An abundant amount of #2
#4...Made me laugh multiple times
#5…My highlighting finger got a really good workout.
#6…Supporting characters were just as well built that now I am auto-reading the next book

And the most important one, I just really, really liked this authors words.

On to the story....

A bad first impression, a heroine with a past that has shaped her to be prickly and sensitive, and a hero not used to getting immediate adoration because of his football stardom (not that he enjoys it, he's a pretty humble guy)...a very bad combination. At first sight, Drew is thunderstruck and speechless over Anna. It's not insta-love. In his own words:

I'm not going to say it was love at first sight. No, it was more like oh, hell-yes-please, I'll have that. With a helping of right-the-fuck-now on the side.

Anna is not impressed by his adulation. In fact, it has the opposite effect. She’s an introverted type of person and he’s so popular, he’s followed on Twitter and Instagram. They take football seriously down south, and his talent has them clambering for a piece of him.

Anna is a complicated girl. She throws off a tough girl vibe that screams strength, but inside, because of bullying in high school, has body and confidence issues. Her body has changed since then, but her mind hasn't. Though she had her insecurities, I still liked her. She was funny, independent, intelligent, and loyal. She was the complete package, but doesn't do serious relationships. So when she has a similar reaction to Drew upon meeting him, she puts up a fortress around herself that's she's determined to keep up around him.

But eventually, one night at a party, it happens.

The Hook Up.

It was the single, most electrifying, life changing experience for both of them. And Ho-lee Hell. Two words. They're hooked. The problem is, she doesn't want to be.

Tonight was obviously an ill-advised hook up for her. And I'm so screwed up because it was the best thing that has ever happened to me.

After realizing she can't stay away from him, she erects "The Rules" to keep them from getting too close. No kissing, no staying the night, no telling anyone, and no falling in love. Drew's willing to gamble that he can make her break all those rules. Game on. They really had some combustible chemistry. And the fact that they couldn't kiss added so much sexual tension to the mix. When they finally do break that rule, it was AMAZING. Never before has so much importance and heat been put into a single first kiss. It's significance is unspoken but plain as day. They give each other untold pleasure but both secretly yearn to explore the intimacy and everything that giving that piece of themselves symbolizes. Best first kiss ever.

And Drew? Perfection. He had a tragic past, but he doesn't obsess over that, he's hot yet sweet, and he's not a manwhore. Yet he was still strong and determined when it came to what he wanted. And that would be Anna. Her complete surrender.

Before you know it, not only their sexual connection is drawing her in, but she's found a best friend in him. They talk long into the night, they debate with each other, their sense of humor is the same, and she finds herself not just wanting him but needing him. Just as he needs her.

His entire body seems to light up. Like he's plugged in to me. And that energy bounces back over me, lifting the little hairs along my skin, tripping up the steady beat of my heart. Lost. I know that now. I've lost myself to him.

Drew presses my hand against his sweaty chest where his heart still beats a fierce rhythm. His voice is whisper-quiet but crystal clear. "My world lives in your palm, Anna."

This book was a lot more than I was planning on. Of course, I had hoped it would be good, but it exceeded my expectations in many ways. More emotion, more steam, more humor, it was simply more. I must mention however, I did have one pet peeve in this book and that was the hero blushing. FYI, that's not hot-he's not a bride or a virginal heroine. But other than that, I couldn't think of a thing to complain about. The characters weren't perfect, but showed real human emotions and even when I wanted to break out something really hard and smack Anna upside her stubborn little head, I was rooting for them all way. I loved how this couple grew together and learned a lot about themselves and what they were capable of. They gave each other strength and I loved spending time with them!! I'm really excited for the next book in the series with Drew's best friend.

Excerpt

My mother once told me that the most important moment in my life wouldn’t be when I won the National Championship or even the Super Bowl. It would be when I fell in love.

Life, she insisted, is how you live it and who you live it with, not what you do to make a living. Given that she told me this when I was sixteen, I basically rolled my eyes and worked on practicing my pass fakes.

But my mother was insistent.

“You’ll see, Drew. One day, love will creep up and smack you upside the head. Then you’ll understand.”

My mom, it turns out, was wrong in one regard. Love, when it came for me, did not creep. No, it walked up to me, bold as you please, you know, just in case I wasn’t paying attention. It did, however, slap me upside my head.

And while I’d be happy to tell my mom that she was right about that, she’s dead. A fact that hurts even more now that I’ve been struck down. More like shot down. Cut off at the knees. Totally fucked. Whatever you want to call this disaster. Because the object of my affection hates me.

I am man enough to acknowledge that the cluster fuck that is my current love life is entirely my fault. I wasn’t prepared for Anna Jones.

I still cringe at the memory of when I first laid eyes on her at the beginning of the semester. Being late for class, I’d rushed to a seat in the back row, and was trying to remain unnoticed. I can’t go anywhere on campus without getting attention. And though it sounds like an awesome thing, it gets tiring.

When the roll call reached the back row, a soft voice, rich and thick as maple syrup, slid over me.

“Anna Jones.”

Just her name. That was all she’d said. It was like a hot finger stroking down my spine. My head snapped up. And there she was, so fucking pretty that I couldn’t think straight. I might as well have been sacked.

Breathless, my head ringing, I could only gape. I’m not going to say it was love at first sight. No, it was more like oh, hell-yes-please, I’ll have that. With a helping of right-the-fuck-now on the side.

Thinking maybe I was overtired and simply overreacting to something that wasn’t really there, I stared at Anna Jones and tried to make sense of my extreme reaction.

As if feeling my gaze, she’d turned, and fucking hell… Her eyes were wide, almost cat-like, with the corners tilting up just a bit. At first, those eyes appeared brown, but they were really bottle green. And so clear. And annoyed. She glared at me. I didn’t care. One word was playing a loop in my head: mine.

I don’t remember the rest of the class. I watched Anna Jones like a condemned man getting his last view of the setting sun. While she tried to ignore me. Admirably.

The second class ended I shot up, and so did she. We nearly collided in the middle of the aisle. And then it all fell to shit.

Christie's review: Ten Below Zero by Whitney Barbetti

22529936

Title: Ten Below Zero
Series: Standalone
Author: Whitney Barbetti
Release Date: August 28, 2014
Rating:5 stars
Cliffhanger: No

“In here,” he said, pushing on the skin above my heart, “you're ten below zero. And you’re closer to death than I am.”

My name is Parker. My body is marked with scars from an attack I don’t remember. I don’t want to remember. I choose to live my life by observation, not through experience. While people are laughing and kissing and connecting, I’m in the corner. Watching them live. I’m indifferent to everything, everyone. The only emotion I feel with any kind of depth is annoyance, and I feel it often.

A text message sent to the wrong number proves to be my undoing.

His name is Everett, but I call him rude. He’s pushy, he’s arrogant, he crowds my personal space, and worst of all: he makes me feel.

He chooses to wear all black, all the time, as if he’s waiting to attend a funeral. Probably because he is.

Everett is dying. And he’s spending his final days living, truly living. In doing so, he’s forcing me to feel, to heal. To come face to face with the demons I suppressed in my memory.

He hurts me, he fulfills me, he completes me. And still, he's dying.

To be perfectly honest, I was a little apprehensive going into this book. I knew that (judging by the synopsis) the potential was there for going through an emotional battle and I wasn’t sure if I would win the war. And with no guarantee of a Happily Ever After…I was jittery. Ok, I was scared. But what really pulled me to this story was the fact that it sounded so different from what I usually read. And here's one thing I know. Different is good.

If you would have told me that I was going to rate this book 5 stars when I was in the first part of the book I don't think I would have believed you. It wasn't the writing itself-as in her debut novel, Whitney has a style of writing that I'm drawn to. It's thought provoking and eloquent. No, my difficulty was the characters. The heroine is called Ten Below Zero for a reason.

Words could bite. When I spoke to strangers, I wanted my words to have fangs.

She's not a very likable person. And he's not much better. One is cold hearted and the other is just hardened. Both rude, blunt, and no sorry a bit about it. But what you have to realize about these characters is they're like an abstract painting. Stand too close, and you see one big mess. But when you stand back and get the bigger picture, you see what it was meant to be.

One is unable to truly live.

Parker is stuck. Numb. Frozen. Unable to experience emotion past indifference or annoyance.

My brain swam in Novocain. I walked through life, straying from potentially dangerous situations.

She's an observer of her own life and everyone else's and can't bring herself to care. As shocking as her physical scars are, her emotional ones are overwhelmingly sad. What she went through and survived is something no one should have to experience. So she avoids conflict and danger at all costs to preserve her safe numbness.

One is just waiting to die

Everett is Rude, blunt, and living with a death sentence. He's when he and Parker meet, he sees someone like him. Someone who's honest but hurting. She's lashing out, but she's not fooling him. He can see deep down into her. And more than that, he wants to see her.

As the story progresses, you see them both thawing and changing. They see past each other's scars-the ones you see and the ones you can't. And the more time they spend together, the closer they come to really experiencing happiness. I started rooting for this couple to fight past their circumstances and make everything okay. But would they find their forever together? Or would she be left just with memories?

This book came rushing up on me in the last half like a tidal wave. The characters were flawed yet there was a a beauty in their struggle to grasp life in all it's possibilities and begin to hope. I'm not going to tell you how this ends. If you know beforehand, you won't experience the same impact that you could have had. I will say that the last 10% of the book was absolutely, positively, nerve-wracking, suspenseful, and I couldn't have imagined it ending in a more perfect way. Down to the last sentence! Everything came together in a way that was so beautiful to me. I can't get over how this book touched me-it wasn't just a book that you read and set aside never to give it a second thought again. It's one that you can come back to-one that you want to come back to. As much as I loved He Found Me, there was something preventing me from giving it a full 5 stars. But this book had that missing piece to me. The emotion it drags from you, the feeling you have after turning the last page tells me that it's 5 star worthy.
