1. Not telling the truth; lying.
2. Based on lies.

At the young, naive age of twenty-three, Alex Lewis believed in the deepness of his love and the strength of his marriage to, Libby, his teenage sweetheart. Married for three years, but struggling financially to keep a roof over their heads, Alex thought his wife would stand by him till the bitter end. But she didn’t. His world crashed down around him.

Fast forward seven years, we meet Alex Lewis again. In the time since his divorce, he has matured significantly. Now the founder and domineering CEO of A L Investments, a multimillion-pound Investment and Management Company, he couldn’t be more different. The high-flying career he has managed to carve conceals a raw and vulnerable side just under the surface. The scars from his ill-fated marriage run deep, leaving him distant, cold, and alone.

So when his path with Libby crosses and an opportunity for revenge presents itself, Alex jumps at the offer. His mind is determined to make Libby feel the pain he has suffered over the last seven years… but his heart and conscience are fiercely battling against him.

The love of his life is back once again, but who can win in this mendacious game of revenge?

But what can I say? I’m Alex Lewis after all. The multi-millionaire with a jackhammer-sized cock. There’s not a woman alive that doesn’t want a piece of this. And that’s the fucking problem. I don’t want any of them.
All because of one girl. She ruined everything by burning her mark deep inside my chest. She was the girl I’d trusted with my life, and in return, royally fucked me over. I had decided there and then I’d never let it happen again. Every move would be calculated precisely. Each encounter would be strategised to perfection.

Although Alex Lewis is a successful business man, his greatest failure has been the dissolution of his marriage after being blindsided by his wife's betrayal seven years prior. A recent development brings her back into his life and when the opportunity for revenge presents itself, he grasps it with both hands.

Quite early on it's fairly transparent that Alex's feeling of anger towards Libby in fact mask his pain. He lashes out constantly, indiscriminately; It's evident in his bitterness towards her and the fact that he's hell bent on destroying her regardless of how many times he protests he has moved on.

 photo 7F9E3C3E-622B-46B5-AB20-8796772CEED3_zpsyqc06nrr.jpg

Sometimes his bitterness borders on brattish and he really could have benefitted from a kick up the backside. Told exclusively from Alex's POV, I found it difficult to relate to Libby as she didn't really make much of an impact for me.

On a whole I expected it to be a darker read, for Alex to be a more callous and vengeful character which wasn't the case. I was genuinely interested in Libby's reasons for leaving and after going through the charade of plotting and scheming, when the truth is revealed its self I have to admit it was rather underwhelming. But alas, the path to true love never did run smooth. Just ask these two.

I walk quietly over to the door and press my ear against it to listen. I can hear the clicking of a computer keyboard, then the rolling wheels of a chair. Finally soft footsteps as he pads towards the doors. I back away, afraid of being caught. But he doesn’t slide them open. Instead, the lights flick off and then his footsteps retreat. I hear the crack of a beer bottle being opened, and then a sigh.
I slide the doors apart, just enough to peek inside.
There’s a large monitor on the desk sitting on front of a wall of windows. And on the screen are the images he took of me this morning. Of JD and me. And of the three of us out on the terrace. They flip by, hundreds of them, at least. Maybe thousands. I look over at the couch where he’s sitting with a beer propped up on his leg, staring at me.
“You can look at them if you come in here to do it.”
I don’t know how he wants me to respond, so I’m unsure if I want to look at them or run back to JD’s room and hide.
“I’m sorry about that,” Ark says, clearing his throat. “It’s just… JD stopped thinking about her, ya know? It took him so fucking long to stop thinking about her. And now here you are with a clue. And…”
I step into the room.
“And he’s gonna go looking for shit again, I just know it.”
I take another step towards him and Ark pats the space on the couch next to him. “I love these pictures. Come look at them with me.”
I take two more steps, and then I’m within arm’s reach and he slips his hand in mine.
My body shivers from his touch, but I let him pull me the rest of the way, and take a seat as he lets go. My butt is barely perched on the cushion, my hands in my lap, my body on high alert in case he wants to hurt me.
But he doesn’t. He surprises me by scooting away, propping his back against the armrest, and stretching out his legs behind me. They are long and in the way, so now I can’t lean back.
He takes a swig from his beer. “I saw you this morning. God, has it only been one day?” I know what he means. It feels like I’ve been in their house forever. “And answers were the last thing on my mind, Blue. I mean, fuck. I’d given up, just like JD. I gave up a while back, actually. Just accepted that this was the way things were. The way my life was gonna go. But fuck.”
I don’t know what any of that means, but I take that it’s not good by the way he finishes the beer and then throws it across the room, where it lands cleanly in an open-top trash can near the desk. “Get me another one, will you?”
I look down at him and squint.
He stares back. His eyes are bleary, and red, and now that I look closely, tired. Not tired like he needs sleep. But tired in a way I can relate to. The kind of tired where your body feels heavy and your mind feels empty. “Never mind,” he says in a soft voice that I’ve never heard before. He says it, but he doesn’t stop staring.
“What?” I ask, getting uncomfortable.
“Why’d you come in here?”
“I was…” I was looking for my money so I could leave. But this guy. These guys… they are pulling me towards them somehow. JD and his charm. Ark and his distance. And despite the fact that they take advantage of girls for a living, they feel very… vulnerable. It feels precarious. Like the whole thing might come crashing down at any moment. Like they are held together by some invisible thread. And not some mental connection or shared experience, either. Although I have no doubt they have all that too.
Held together by a thread that’s invisible because it’s nearly gone.
We are alike, then. Aren’t we?
Three people brought together by the early-morning rain.
Two of us clinging together, trying to stick it out. Ride the wave until it crashes, and then help each other up to start all over again.
One of us already dead. Still walking, but not living. Waiting to be saved. Or maybe wanting to be the one who does the saving.

Eliza's Review: Kyland (A sign of love novel) by Mia Sheridan

                                                 Kyland (A Sign of Love)

Title: Kyland
Series: A sign of love
Author: Mia Sheridan
Release date: 24th January, 2015
Rating: 3-3.5 "bobcat protection" stars
Cliffhanger: Standalone
Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

 photo 15CF17FE-49A1-4062-AE82-017B16812035_zpsp64hxpxv.jpg

What I enjoy most about Mia Sheridan’s storytelling is her ability to find beauty in the most tragic of situations. I found Kyland to be a story of loneliness, isolation, loss, sacrifice but above all the beauty of the human heart.

"You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone forever . . . I have loved none but you,"

I found it an incredibly sad story, Kyland and Tenleigh come from an impoverished community, the harsh winters reflect the harsh realities of life and the only chance they have of making it out brings them both heartache and pain.

Even though it has a happy ending, I couldn’t shake the lingering feeling of sadness for Kyland after I’d finished. Although he does not achieve what he deemed success in his youth he still has the future he daren't have wished for.

Tenderness filled her expression and she brought her hand up to my cheek as I leaned in to her caress and she ran her thumb over my cheekbone. "Is it enough?" she whispered. I leaned forward and kissed her, never in my life feeling more sure about anything. I whispered against her lips, "It's more than enough . . . it's so much more than I ever dreamed."

It was an enjoyable read and my rating is reflective on the fact that, they both had hardship heaped on them their whole lives and I would have liked to have spent more time with them being explicitly happy.

“I want to spend your last semester getting you out of those fucking pearls and on all fours.”

That’s what he said to me when he found out that with one semester of college left, my father—his colleague—had cut me off. Young, wickedly handsome, and deliciously moody, Senator Graham Delaney’s filthy proposition to cover tuition in exchange for one semester of kink was terrifying and thrilling and offensive. Very, very offensive.
If you’re wondering if I told him to go screw himself after he gave me his ultimatum—if the night ended with me slapping that smirk off his face—that didn’t happen.
Instead, I did what I needed to do.
I just didn’t expect to like it.

He fingers the string of pearls around my neck, and I hold back a tremble when his thumb traces my collarbone. “I know you don’t.” He drops my necklace, backing away from me, and gesturing to a glassed-in balcony with a fantastic view of the city lights and the Washington Monument. Squinting, I see there’s a table set for two out there. “Dinner, Elle, before I decide our time is better suited with my face against your—” Tuning out that last little bit, I walk a little too quickly onto the balcony, but the clench in my thighs makes me stumble. He steadies me, gripping my hips from behind me, and pouring gasoline on the fire his words started. “Are you always so clumsy?” Only when hot men who are a decade older than me threaten to go down on me in lieu of dinner. “No. Do you start all your dates like this?” I retort. “No.” We sit down, and the look he gives me is downright predatory. “I normally fuck first, dine later. I usually prefer the dining to be done alone without all the awkward chit-chat.” Flushed, I glance away from his face, focusing on an elaborate chess table, complete with tan and black marble pieces, sitting in the far corner of the balcony. Does he play? I’d learned from my maternal grandfather as a child, but I’d probably get my ass taken to town now, especially by someone like Graham. And instantly, my thoughts go south, carnal, and I blame his suggestive words. I sigh. “You know, you talk about fucking so much it makes me question—” I release a yelp when he pulls my hand in his under the table and shoves it against his zipper, closing my fingers around the unquestionable—and admittedly very, very impressive—bulge. Wow. “That’s not hard, Elle,” he tells me in a low voice, “but if you’re doubtful of my ability to make you forget your fucking name, how to walk—and everything else but yes, please, and more—it won’t take long for you to get me there.”

Thank you, Maya St. James for bringing me Senator Graham Delaney. He's a self assured, arrogant, sexy bastard and I can't get enough of him.

 photo B50DEEF1-3A67-4AE3-A13F-B070BD469AFF_zpsigfrq482.gif

Eleanor Courtney is near enough perfect. Well put together, well read and well versed in the pressures of having a father in the Senate. Her parents are more concerned with their image and public perception and as a result of a family dispute and her not falling in line, her father sees fit to cut her off financially, leaving her no way of paying tuition for her last semester of college.

Graham Delaney is a member of the same party as her father and for reasons currently unbeknown, her predicament gives him the perfect opportunity to seek revenge against her father. Elle is merely a means to an end, his unsuspecting pawn. He makes her an offer that's hard to refuse and after much contemplation and provocation from him, she accepts.

 photo A09BA4FE-0387-4488-909C-DE63490EFD12_zpsjwtmg43p.jpg

Politely feral, unashamedly blunt; Graham Delaney knows how to push her buttons. He has a filthy, filthy mouth and the means to back it up. Even so he can't help but acknowledge she affects him too.

“You’re going to be a greedy one, and I wonder if this—” I slide my hand between her thighs, rubbing my fingers over the slick reward her aggravating tights are obstructing. She sucks in a ragged breath. When I trace the column of her throat again, this time with my tongue, she exhales and swallows hard. “—will be just as selfish.”

I completely taken this story so far. I like that Graham is a bit of a grouch, it brings some humour to the proceedings. Although Elle is somewhat quiet and well put together, I don't get the doormat vibe from her at all, further confirmed by the confrontation at the end. Politics may not be my strong point but I'd happily vote for "Senator Sexy-Ass"
