“Yes. The puppies jump all over each other to get to their mother and it’s just so beautiful, with their cute little tails wagging and everything.”

He just stared at me.

“I know its psycho, Ben. Believe me, I’m well aware of this.”

“Hey, it’s fine.” He covered a smile with his hand. Too late, the bastard.

“You try dealing with all these hormones going apeshit. Crap. Apeshoot.”

“Apeshoot?”

“I’m trying not to swear,” I explained. “You want the first word our child comes out with to be something bad?”

“No. Gotcha.” The man was incredibly bad at hiding a grin. “No swearing.”

Straightening my shoulders, I forced my feet forward and suppressed my nerves. The closer I got to the end of the hallway, the more I doubted my decision to come here. It was his private space. He most definitely would not want me intruding.

But as I thought to leave, I heard the poetic sound of a chisel chipping away at marble and I stilled.

I wanted to see him work. To observe an artist at work was a rare privilege. And more than that, I wanted, no, needed to see Elpidio again.

I couldn’t help it. I felt a pull within me that refused to let me turn round and leave.

Rubbing my lips together, I bent to place the box of text board drafts on the ground and crept forward to stand in the door-less doorway… And the sight that greeted me took my breath away.

Elpidio stood in the center of the room, dressed only in a pair of black ripped jeans, his top half bare, every inch of his olive skin covered in what looked like thousands of tattoos. There wasn’t one bit of naked skin showing. I’d never seen anyone so covered in ink in all my life. But aside from the tattoos, which had me gripping the doorframe with rigid fingers, were the thick defined muscles protruding over his shoulder blades, the cut pieces of flesh damp with the sheen of sweat, flexing with every blow from the hammer in his hands.

His bulging thighs were rigid as he stood his ground, carefully sculpting the back of a marble slab which looked to be the image of a young boy with a larger boy at his back whispering in his ear.

The heavy rock music filled the room, and before I knew it, my feet were carrying my forward like a moth to naked flame. The closer I got, the more I noticed.

Elpidio’s back was marred with scars. In fact, all of his skin had scars, both long and short, raised and flat, red and white. But one long, jagged scar ran along the back of his thick neck…  a neck that was visible now it was free from the curtain of dark hair which was tied on the middle of his skull in a loose bun.

That made me smile. I’d always thought his long hair was like his protection, his mask. It pleased me to see when he was sculpting it was pulled off his face… like he was free of all constraints, pouring his soul into his carefully-crafted masterpieces.

It was overwhelming to see such a ripped and tortured man so raw and unkempt, but passionate all at the same time…

Every time I read a book from Tillie Cole's Sweet Home Series it pretty much guarantees there will be an abundance of feels and tears. Sweet Hope does not disappoint, on this occasion the mass of emotion comes courtesy of Ally and Elpidio. Ally's role so far in this series has been that of sweet, loyal cousin and friend besides that, she's a bit of a mystery and I had been looking forward to learning more about her.

Working as a curator, Ally has just been afforded the opportunity that not only will be of professional development to her but also personally inspiring. The Artist in question is the mysterious Elpidio. Having followed and studied his work previously it's important to her to understand the man behind his creations.

Elpi is a tortured individual so weighed down by tremendous guilt and the mistakes of his past, he refuses to see any of the goodness Ally sees in him. She is the smooth to his rough edges, the light to his darkness. Rather than repel her, he speaks to her soul. Her faith in him is unrelenting. It's impossible to not warm to Ally, she becomes his main source of positivity and as a reader their best interests became mine.

The professional relationship blurs and sculpts into a a physical and emotional one. It's guilty of being a little corny at times and I dare say too intense for my fragile nature at times too. I would have liked to have seen some lighter times between them but at the same time I recognise the authors ability of staying honest to the story. To understand the depth of Sweet Hope you have to read Sweet Fall but I say, this series is too great to not read them all.

I let out a long sigh and glanced up at the ceiling as I tried to find the right words to say. Yes, he was going to make this as difficult as possible to walk out the door.

“Lucas, it’s not that simple—”

“I know I’m not supposed to think about you all day long. I know I’m not supposed to want to talk to you every minute of the day, or touch you, or kiss you. But, fuck—” Lucas closed the space between us and grabbed me by the nape of my neck, pulling me towards him. “That’s all I ever want to do, Sam.” Our faces were close enough that our lips were almost touching.

From the hungry look in his eyes, I thought he was going to kiss me hard, but he was gentle. A light kiss at first, gentle pecks on my lips, very soft but lingering longer each time his lips touched mine. His hand slid from my neck to the small of my back as he pulled me closer. My heartbeat thundered in my ears as I realized I was about to completely give in. As soon as it seemed the kiss was about to get deeper, he pulled back. “Don’t swear at him.” My usually sensible and staid sister poked a finger dead center in Ben’s broad chest. “You’re the one that caused this mess, thank you very much. She might still be a little young and naive, but you’re definitely old enough to know better.”

“That’s right.” Standing about as tall as a skyscraper, despite only coming up to Ben’s nose, Mal stared him down. Or up. Whatever. “This is a family matter. You can leave, thanks.”
