I’m not sure if I walked or floated into the apartment. After placing my grocery bags in the kitchen, I headed back to bed. A fresh arrangement of flowers was on sitting on the nightstand. I was thankful that I had taken the time to remove one of the Bachelor Button’s from the arrangement to dry before I left. The faint scent of apple filled the room. The flowers were delicate and varied in color from white to pink. I quickly opened the card and read.

I never thought that I would write a novel, although my English teacher my freshman year in college told me that he would hunt me down if I wasn’t published by the time I was thirty. Well, thirty came and went. I was busy being a wife and working mother of two, and nobody came looking for me.

I doubt my sister thought she was about to change my life forever when she got me a book of “mommy porn” for my birthday in 2012, but that’s exactly what she did. After reading the first book in the trilogy, I rushed out and got the other two books. I became obsessed and read the series several times before learning about Fanfiction. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t get enough. The idea fascinated me and I thought, “I can do that.” I was a nervous wreck when I posted my first story, a one shot about my new favorite couple. One story lead to another and then another. My readers encouraged me to write something that was all mine, so that‘s what I did. Thank you to everyone who told me that I could do it. It wouldn’t have been possible without you.

I love reading, writing, traveling, and spending time with my family.  Thank you for going on this journey with me.

“Please,” I added, realizing I needed him on my side, and unable to avoid the hint of desperation in my tone. I mentally cringed. “Please don’t tell anyone I’m here.”

He assessed me, leaning back, one arm slung along the empty chair back next to him and his eyes narrowed. There was a gemstone that exact color. What was it called? 

I frantically thought of a way to explain what I was doing here. And I wished I could see something else in his expression through the facial hair. 

“Fine,” he said finally, with a stiff nod.

“Fine?” 

“Yes, fine.”

“What are you hiding from?” I asked suddenly, not sure where the question came from. 

I almost missed the flicker of shock in his gaze, before he shrugged nonchalantly. “And we won’t ask each other questions.” 

“Okay,” I agreed, with abundant relief, despite the weirdness of our situation.

Well, well, well. Wasn’t that an interesting puzzle? Why would a guy who was obviously well-spoken and educated, from what I could tell, take on the lonely job of looking after an isolated cottage in the middle of nowhere? 

The silence was extremely uncomfortable as we both regrouped. 

Eventually he sighed. “You look better without all the black shit all over your face.” 

Obviously, he was referring to the black eyeliner and lipstick I’d taken to wearing. It matched my nails, my usual clothes and my mood. And it hid me. People’s eyes glided away from me when I started dressing like that, so I kept it up. It made things easier for me out in the world. All I had to do was also block out the whispers in the hallways of my preppy school. It had the added benefit that my parents hated it. 

“Well, you’d probably look better without that hairy shit all over your face.” I bit my lip as soon as the words were uttered.

Seriously, sometimes I had no filter.

There was movement in his beard. 

Was he actually going to smile? His caramel eyes crinkled up and suddenly his beard split open in a wide smile filled with perfect white teeth, and a snort of laughter came out. He was almost beautiful, not that I was into older guys. I didn’t know where to look, but his wheeze of laughter was infectious and I found myself fighting my own smile. 

Then he took a deep breath. “I … I was in love with your sister. That’s how you know me,” he said.

The words were out there so suddenly, and he looked so shocked that he’d uttered them, that neither of us spoke for interminable minutes. 

No questions.

Abruptly, he got up, scraping the chair across the old wooden floor, and walked to the front door. He paused a moment, his shoulders rigid, then yanked the door and smacked the screen open. In a moment, he was gone, both doors slamming shut behind him, leaving a vast emptiness in his wake.

This is one of those times that I had the book sitting on my kindle, and somehow it kept getting pushed down on my TBR pile for no apparent reason. Now it has a proud place on my why-didn't-I-read-this-earlier shelf. When I finally sat down and started to dig in, I quickly saw that this book is much more sexually explicit and more humorous than my previous ALJ read.

Warner's mouth was writing sonnets to my pussy and at the moment, he was fucking Shakespeare.

Warner and Dawn (or Bunny and Wardo as they like to call each other) have been frienemies since they were 14 years old. Dawn was always the good girl who worked hard in school and Warner was that guy that took delight in pushing all of her buttons. As the years went by, his teasing and rude ways only caused the love-hate dynamic to grow. It was clear to me that it was his immature way of expressing his crush on her-he was just incapable of showing it in the proper way. And Dawn kind of had a stick up her ass so she wasn't having any of his bullshit. I must admit, this heroine did get on my nerves with her prissy attitude in the beginning. Thank god, Warner worked his miracle with her, because she could have ruined it for me.



Fast forward to now: they're both in college. She's trying to write her first romance novel, but her sexual inexperience is making her writing come off as completely ridiculous. (With words like: nubs, pebbled love buttons, and aroused flower, it's no wonder she's dissatisfied with her book.) When Warner discovers her sad attempt at writing, he sees this as his chance to finally get the girl that's eluded him all these years. His offer to awaken her repressed inner sex kitten is one she can't turn down. It has nothing to do with her own unwanted, ignored feelings for him. Nothing whatsoever. (That was sarcasm) But Wardo won't just jump right in to the main attraction with her. There's a lot of teasing, teaching, and raging hormones.



Warner slowly pushes her boundaries and helps her explore what she's been missing out on all these years. He was quite the tease, giving her just enough to tide her over but never enough to satisfy. The sexual frustration built until I was more than ready for them to get on with it. But all that build up paid off because the result was well worth the wait.

He let out a whispered, "Jesus," before a full body tremor rolled through his frame, causing his arms and stomach to flex. Ever so gently, he ran his chin against my cheek and exhaled into my ear.
"It's better than I ever imagined."



They worked well together, I really enjoyed their bantering, and seeing her loosen up and start to take life a little less seriously. There was one little conflict-a secret past that he was hiding from her, but it didn't cause any drama whatsoever when it came out, and I was really fine with that.

I liked this book for it's light effervescent quality, and the steam was pretty well done. I loved Warner, he was bold and naughty all the way through and I wanted to kick Dawn for her oblivious ignorance of his feelings toward her. It took me a while to warm up to her, but she did bring me around in the end. I would have enjoyed seeing a bit more depth to their relationship-there was a lot of sex going on, but I get that they knew each other for many years so the getting to know one another phase is pretty unnecessary. I did feel as if it would have improved the story to see more bonding and less sexing, but still, it was a fun read. If you like the friends to lovers trope, or New Adult with a little different spin than the norm, this could be the one for you.
