Excerpt: Until Jax

“Thank you again for taking me.” Pulling my eyes from the road for a brief moment, I look at Ellie. Her head is resting against the window, her legs pulled up onto the seat, tucked near her ass, and her arms are wrapped tight around them. One thing I’ve noticed about her over the last few hours is she’s always wrapping her arms around herself or tucking her body into a tight ball. It’s like she’s forcing herself to stay together.

“I told you I got you, baby,” I say gently, wanting more than anything to take her hand in mine, but every time I touch her, she freezes up like she’s waiting for me to strike out at her, and I would be lying if I said that didn’t piss me the fuck off. It does; it feels like a slap in the face every time it happens.

“I know,” she whispers, and the tears I hear in her voice cause a sharp pain in my chest.

Fuck.

“This is the turnoff.” Her feet go to the floorboard and her hands to the dash as she sits up taller, moving her face closer to the windshield. We drive up a long dirt driveway with forest and the occasional broken down car on each side. When we make it to the top of the hill, a singlewide trailer comes into view, with junk cars and garbage piled up out front.

As soon as I come to a stop, she opens her door and hops out before I can tell her to keep her little ass in the cab. I don’t even know how I’m going to deal with the range of emotions that have settled over me since seeing her for the first time.

“Fucking Boom,” I mutter, getting out behind her and doubling my steps until I’m able to reach her side, where I wrap my hand around her waist and pull her closer to me. She’s so fucking tiny that the top of her dark head sits right at my chest. So fragile, from her too soft skin to her petite size. And she’s mine.

Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the second instalment in The Allure series. Once again your blend of romantic comedy and quirky characters really hit the spot.

I'm a simple girl, give me a successful guy with confidence, the ability to fill out a suit, a potty mouth with some added prowess between the sheets and I'm a happy bunny. Make him part asshole and I'm sold! But enough about Dean Harper. I adored Lily also, her confidence, humour, fire and ability to put her foot in her mouth made her a winning female lead for me.

I can't decide what I enjoyed the most. The HateLove/Hate relationship, the hilarious banter or the sexual tension, so I won't choose and declare I'd enjoyed them all.

“There’s nothing wrong with you,” I tell her. “I promise you that.”

“Look at me,” she repeats. “Have you ever had a date end this way?”

“Our date didn’t even start,” I say. “And hey, you didn’t go crazy and shave your head, so I say you’re doing all right.”

She laughs, and her arms slowly wrap around me. Something inside me relaxes. I sit and pull her onto my lap and we stay there in silence for a few minutes. Gently, I push her hair out of her face. “Want that drink now?” She laughs again and nods.

“I need that drink now.” She stands up and wipes her eyes, smearing her makeup across her cheeks. “And really, I won’t hold it against you or call the tabloids on you if you drop me off at home and call it a night.”

Tabloids? The word is jarring. For a few minutes I was the real Aiden again…and I didn’t mind. “It’s up to you, Haley. I’m not mad or upset, so don’t worry. I don’t like seeing you sad, and if you’d like, I want to try and cheer you up.”

“I’d like that.”

I stand and drape my arm around her. “Are you hungry? I can go get the food.”

“I am. And thanks, Aiden. I…I don’t know.”

“What?” I probe.

“I’m surprised by your kindness.”

“Ouch,” I say with a chuckle. “Thanks?”

She smiles and takes a step toward the restaurant. “Hey, you can’t really blame me, can you?”

I can’t, because I’ve fooled the world—and at times, myself—about who I really am. The partying, the women, the excessive spending, and run-ins with the American law…okay, so maybe I had a reputation. “No, I can’t. But I’m glad I surprised you.”

I needed to focus on school and getting my degree, not on the first real guy that asked me out on a date—even if that guy was currently making my heart beat faster and my body pulse in a way no one ever had before.

You have this…” Just when I didn’t think he was going to finish his sentence, he continued, “…innocence. Yeah, that’s what it is. All the girls I know around here have an agenda. Essentially, Riann C. Miller's debut novel is a second chance romance. I enjoyed the evolution of the couple and supporting characters in the latter part of the novel, in particular Jet. Hopefully there is a story for him in there somewhere.

Once all the clothes are folded, I pick up the basket, taking it to the guest room. I knock, but there’s no response. He must still be in the shower, so I quickly open the door and make a beeline for the bed. I place the basket on the bed. Turning to leave, I stop in my tracks as Sawyer opens the bathroom door, walking out with just a towel wrapped dangerously low around his waist and another towel in his hand, drying his hair. He hasn’t even noticed I’m frozen in place, staring at his ripped six pack abs…no wait, eight pack abs…with a few water drops from his hair dripping down, making me want to follow the trail with my tongue.
The water drop I’ve been following disappears behind the towel hiding an impressive male appendage I’ve dreamt about for several weeks. Hell, since the first night we slept together, I can’t get sex off my mind.
“You keep staring like that, you better be ready to deal with the consequences.”
My head jerks in response. Our eyes meet. The towel drying his hair is now wrapped around his neck as he leans against the door frame with his arms crossed across his chest, looking sexy as sin. I mean, seriously, no man should be allowed to look this good, right?
“What are you doing, Dani?”
“Oh…um…” I stutter. He lifts an eyebrow in question. Why does this man reduce me to a blubbering idiot with just one look? “I was just…um…bringing your clothes back for you.”
He looks at the basket on the bed. “Thank you for that, but that’s not what I meant.”
“What are you talking about then?” I ask, genuinely unsure what he’s questioning.
Sawyer pushes off the wall and stalks towards me. He’s close enough I feel the heat pulsing from his body, but not touching me at all. One slight movement and my body could be flush against every long hard inch of him.
“You know what I’m talking about.” I tilt my head back to meet his stare. He continues as he stares at my lips. “The vibe you’re giving off in spades.”
“What vibe is that?” I ask breathlessly.
“The ‘I need you to fuck me now’ vibe.”
“I…uh…” I lick and bite my bottom lip.
“Fuck it.” His lips crash into mine.
