Review: Markswoman by Rati Mehrotra

Synopsis

Kyra is the youngest Markswoman in the Order of Kali, one of a handful of sisterhoods of highly trained elite warriors. Armed with blades whose metal is imbued with magic and guided by a strict code of conduct, the Orders are sworn to keep the peace and protect the people of Asiana. Kyra has pledged to do so—yet she secretly harbors a fierce desire to avenge her murdered family.

When Tamsyn, the powerful and dangerous Mistress of Mental Arts, assumes control of the Order, Kyra is forced on the run. She is certain that Tamsyn committed murder in a twisted bid for power, but she has no proof.

Kyra escapes through one of the strange Transport Hubs that are the remnants of Asiana’s long-lost past and finds herself in the unforgiving wilderness of a desert that is home to the Order of Khur, the only Order composed of men. Among them is Rustan, a disillusioned Marksman whose skill with a blade is unmatched. He understands the desperation of Kyra’s quest to prove Tamsyn’s guilt, and as the two grow closer, training daily on the windswept dunes of Khur, both begin to question their commitment to their Orders. But what they don’t yet realize is that the line between justice and vengeance is thin . . . as thin as the blade of a knife.

Markswoman (Asiana, #1)
Title: Markswoman
Series: Asiana #1
Author: Rati Mehrotra
Release date: January 23, 2018
Cliffhanger: Yes
Rating: 3 stars

“To be evil is to suffer, and there is joy in releasing others from suffering."

When I first spotted this book, I just had to have it. The entire package was calling out to me, telling me that I needed to read it. A group of revered female assassins who use magic daggers to enforce justice and keep the peace? That cover? A debut YA fantasy author to try out? Yes, yes, and more yes. Give me a pen and paper, and I'll sign on the dotted line. I was eager for this book to be a huge hit, but while it wasn't bad by any means, it wasn't what I was hoping it would be. My main issue was that I just could not stay engaged in the story. Throughout the majority of the book, it felt as if it was dragging at a snail's pace, and I had to keep setting it down and picking it back up again.

I think the plot may have suffered from that dreaded first book in a fantasy trilogy syndrome. All of the necessary characters' introductions, intricate world building, and establishing backstories can drain the story of potential action. I felt as if I spent most of the book learning about their culture and waiting for things to kick into a higher gear.

Kyra as the main protagonist was at the top of the list of things that were right. Having a female centric story was appealing enough, but it was an added bonus that she was a likable character that I could root for. In the beginning of the book, she has just earned her place as an official Markswoman after taking out her first mark. We see that she is a young woman who struggles with the morality of what she is doing, and her doubts consume her despite a personal interest in the kill. Kyra is a bit of a rebel in the sense that she is unable to let go of the injustices done on her family in the past. Her heart is firmly set on revenge, even though the Order specifically mandates that all members must release the past in order to give themselves and their futures to their superiors. The hatred and anger she feels towards those who wronged her just cannot be snuffed out. It simmers and burns quietly under the surface, just waiting for the opportunity to appease it.

Kyra started out as a novice in the Order at the age of five, the youngest that had ever been accepted. Since that time, she took classes and trained, working towards earning the katari that she would eventually bond with through life and beyond. The rare kalishium metal that is forged with has telepathic properties that they still don't fully comprehend, and the skill to produce these special daggers is almost extinct. To earn these extremely rare weapons, novices are put through a rigorous coming of age trial with four stages that prove their worth. The concept was really unique, and the idea behind it one that was clearly intelligently thought out.

The themes of good and evil were prevalent, most notably in the kalashik guns formed before the Great War that alter minds, causing horrible death and destruction. Whereas katari blades seek to protect, there is a wrongness to these guns that almost wiped out an entire world. Another was prejudice, aimed towards the one solitary male Order of Khur. These men are belittled and insulted despite their fierceness and skill, and the females are generally taught that they are imposters. This was an interesting gender power reversal, and smartly highlighted the unfairness of discrimination and inequality in society in a fresh way.

Rustan is the second protagonist, one of the males in the Order of Khur. When Kyra flees her home and steps through a portal that has been closed for decades, her preconceptions quickly change about Rustan and the rest of his Order. Training with him is a very humbling experience, and she realizes that her plan to return home to her Order and her comfortable life may be doomed for failure. If she cannot best this man, how will she win the dual against the traitorous new Mahimata?

Both are tormented with their own uncertain futures, and self-doubt plagues them. However, they both showed extraordinary courage and commitment to doing the right thing despite the odds that were against them. Separately they were great, but as a couple, I couldn't really get behind the pairing. Their romantic emotions had absolutely no realistic build to speak of. At one point, we were abruptly told that he was in love with her, with no foundation at all. We were not shown this development at all, making the entire thing two dimensional and disingenuous. I personally enjoy romance in my fantasy books, but this was not executed well in my opinion.

I will say, the last 15-20% of the story finally fully engaged me, and the climax was well written and impressively creative. I wish that I had felt that way about more of the book, and perhaps the following installment would be more successful in consistently holding my interest. There was quite the cliffhanger at the end, so I confess that I'm more than a little curious as to how it will continue. I think this could be a hit for many fantasy lovers, especially if you're looking for something unique with a strong female character in the forefront.

**The Second book in the Asiana series will be released in January 2019.

Cover Reveal: Memphis by Ginger Scott

Check out the amazing cover of Memphis by Ginger Scott! We are so excited about this release!

Memphis by Ginger Scott
A Contemporary New Adult Romance
Release day: February 23

Goodreads

Blurb:

My mom always said it was just something about the way he moved.
The same swagger Archie Valentine wore in the ring when he took his opponents down followed him like a halo everywhere he went. But make no mistake about it—he was no angel. He was like a drug. My mother was his addict.

I never understood it…how love could make you blind and convince you to drink the poison. Not until I met Memphis Delaney.

At first, it was the familiar form. He’s a fighter, built like a god from the past, the kind of man the universe doesn’t make anymore. His eyes hide a story, and every time I’m in his presence I want to keep reading him until I get to the end. And then…there’s the way he moves. His boxing is violent but beautiful, and his body is a seductive weapon. When he’s in the ring, he wears the stare of a man committed to the battle until his very last breath.

He could end me; turn me into her. Too much of him will leave me as a shadow, and I’ve lost so much of myself already.

But I have discipline. It came the hard way. Lessons learned, scars left behind, and trust stripped away from life.

I will breathe his air, but I won’t fall for a man like him. The only boxer who’s ever going to break my heart is the one who gave me my name.

– Jenna Lee

If only there were more stars I would add more. This book was one of my most-anticipated books and I was not disappointed.

One of my top authors of 2017 and by far one of my favourite authors ever, Meg Anne has hit point yet again with the second book of 'The Chosen' Series!

The first book blew me away and made me fall in love with the author and her world, but the second just took it to the next level not to mention the insane ending!

I just hope that we do not have to wait too long for the next installment!
–R. Murray

Last year when I read Mother of Shadows I was in awe. A brand new author had written what was by far the best book written by an independent author, I had ever read and at least the best book I had read in 2017 period. Then just as the year came to a close, Meg Anne did it again with the second book in the Chosen Series, Reign of Ash. She drew me back into the world that she had created with vivid descriptions and cracking jokes. When I wasn't laughing, I was crying. The plot was fast paced and the suspense was insane. I craved each new paragraph like a child wanting chocolate cake. Reign of Ash picks up where Mother of Shadows left off and takes us on a journey that at times feels soul destroying, as we witness the characters we've grown to love experience the worst of what Meg Anne's world has to offer and the best. I can't recommend this book enough. I can't describe how much I love it. And I can't explain how much I need to read book three.

Excerpt

The figure in the center moved forward. Long skeletal fingers appeared from the bottom of its sleeves to lift the hood back to reveal its face. There was a startled gasp behind her, but it was the only sound in the entirety of the clearing. Even the animals had decided to make themselves scarce for this particular meeting.

Helena couldn’t blame them. The Keepers were terrifying. There was no other word for the beings that stood before her. The other two followed the lead of the first and removed their hoods. She swallowed thickly, silently wishing they would put them back.

Their faces were gaunt, hairless, and a white so pale, she could make out the pulsing of purple veins beneath the thin skin. Their eyes were pits of black and their mouths were stitched shut, thick black cords woven in a crisscrossing pattern along the length of them. The only distinguishing marks between them were the swirling tattoos that covered almost every visible inch of skin. The markings were a deep navy blue, but as Helena stared at them, they seemed to shift and move in a serpentine fashion.

Without conscious thought, Helena decided the only way to get through this encounter was to brazen it out. “It would seem that Miranda got the looks in the family.”

Behind her Kragen and Ronan snickered with appreciation, while she saw Timmins close his eyes in dismay. Miranda’s own lips curled in an approving smile.

“Kiri, may I introduce you to the Triumvirate,” she said by way of introduction. “These are the oldest of the Keepers, those who have sworn their loyalty to the realm and have shaken off all vestiges of their past lives in order to lead and offer guidance without any of the bias of mortality.”

“One could argue that it is mortality that allows for the most valuable of guidance,” Helena murmured.

“Our Kiri is wise,” the voices hissed in her mind. It was hard to discern any type of emotion, but Helena could have sworn she sensed amusement.

“You will have to forgive my ignorance,” Helena replied, “I had not realized the head of the Keepers would be gracing us with their presence.”

“Nor had I, Kiri, or I would have better prepared you,” Miranda said drolly. There was a hint of censure in her voice, as though she was not pleased by the appearance of the Triumvirate.

Beyond Scandal and Desire (Sins for All Seasons, #1)
Title: Beyond Scandal and Desire
Series: Sins for All Seasons #1
Author: Lorraine Heath
Release date: January 30, 2018
Cliffhanger: No
Rating: 4.5 stars

She was no longer the means to an end, but had become the end itself.
This is my first book by Lorraine Heath, and right out of the starting gate, she landed herself a spot on my auto-read author list.  I was so impressed that I'm now on a mission to get through some of her backlist this year, to explore what I've been missing out on. This book gave me that rare and elusive giddiness you feel when you find an author and story that you connect with in every way. Heath paints the culture and people so vividly in color for you that her story doesn't just come to life, it takes you inside all of its brilliant shades. If you're late to her work like I was, there's no time like the present to correct that error.

The blurb for Beyond Scandal and Desire caught my eye immediately. A revenge plot where the unsuspecting heroine is caught in the hero's crossfire? Count me in. Though I have to admit, I was a little nervous in the beginning that Mick would be too heartless and unlikable to warm up to. Luckily, this wasn't the case at all. Yes, he was stern, ruthless, and cut a pretty intimidating figure. But there was a never a point when he was at his worst that I didn't see the good in him. Under his rough exterior, he's fiercely loyal and protective of his adoptive family. Mick's character clearly had some growing to do, but I had faith he would get there in time.

Through the common practice of baby farming, the nobility were spared the hassle of facing the consequences of their actions. The Duke of Hedley believed that his own inconvenient truth was buried, but truth and justice were about to be resurrected. Mick wasn't content with being a dark stain, living in the shadows amongst the dregs of society. He was going to have it all, take it all, or die trying.

He’d climbed as far as he could up the social ladder. To reach the higher rungs, others had to fall—far and spectacularly, like fireworks burning out on their way down. He would be paid what he was owed. And God’s mercy on anyone who stood in his way.

Lady Aslyn Hastings is the ward of the Duke and Duchess of Hedley. For as long as she can remember, there has been an unspoken understanding that one day she would marry their son, Kip. She's coddled, and lectured on etiquette and morality until she feels positively stifled in their care. Secretly, she's bored at this bland life that's allotted to her, but she manages to ignore her rebellious streak for the most part. Her (almost) fiancè Kip is respectful at all times, polite, and the epitome of a proper gentleman around her. So why does she feel like something is not quite right about how they fit?

They were to marry, and yet she felt like a child playing at pretend, not a woman anticipating the days—and nights—to come with relish. She’d been brought up to always feel calm and steady, but at that moment she desired only to feel more.

After Aslyn and Kip have a seemingly chance meeting with Mick, he subtly starts to maneuver them like pawns on his chessboard. What he never could have planned for was the feelings that Aslyn immediately started to stir in him. This was where the story really started to become addictive to me. Forbidden feelings, suppressed desires, and shattered preconceptions made for some heady reading. The tension between these two was tangible, and though Mick had every intention to seduce her from the start, suddenly, all he wants to do is protect her from himself and anyone else who would harm her. She brought a softness out in him, and an inner turmoil that was completely new to him.

He was a man accustomed to controlling his world, his fate, his destiny—yet where she was concerned, he’d lost his bearings. He felt as though she possessed a sledgehammer and was knocking away his wall of indifference, brick by brick. How would he protect himself when they were all gone? He didn’t know if he could find the resilience to stack the bricks back up.

Mick must adjust his plans, or risk losing the woman who has come to mean everything to him. But even if he alters the path he has chosen, there's no guarantee that she will stand by him when the truth is out. Realistically, he knows that society will never favor a match between the two of them. So why can't he bring himself to walk away?

One thing about the story that didn't work for me personally was the way that Kip's severe addiction was swept under the rug at the end. We were supposed to believe that his "lesson was learned" and he'll be fine as long as they watch over him. All will be well. I just can't accept that, it was a little to convenient to be believed.  This was the only thing holding me back from giving this a full five stars, and it didn't affect my enjoyment all that much.

Overall, I was thrilled with the first installment in the Sins for all Seasons series. There was angst, passion, and belly flutters galore. I'm anxiously patiently awaiting When a Duke Loves a Woman's August release. Mick's sister Gillie is up next, and her story promises to be just as exceptional.
