Enjoy a sneak peek into Calia Read's time travel romance—The Surviving Trace—coming on May 21st! 4 more days!!!

Will is my fiancé. The shy man I met years ago in college. The person I’m supposed to spend the rest of my life with.
This is the life I’ve always wanted until finding a picture of four men changes everything…
Etienne says he’s my husband and the year is 1912. He can’t stand the sight of me, but I don’t know why.
Oh, and he’s one of the men from the picture.
I’ve done the impossible and have become trapped in time and I know Etienne is my key to going home.
The more time I spend with Etienne, the further I fall for him, until I’m questioning which time I belong in and if the life I left behind is the one I truly desire.
All I know for certain is I need to survive time.
I need to survive love.
And I need to make it out on the other side alive.

REVIEW

Laird of the Black Isle (The MacGregors: Highland Heirs, #7)Laird of the Black Isle by Paula Quinn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is my first read by Paula Quinn, and it won't be my last. Laird of the Black Isle was such a pure delight to read! It kind of takes me back to the classic historical romances that I fell in love with when I first started reading romance. The Julie Garwood Laird books in particular. If you loved those books, you'll probably enjoy this book as well! We get the kidnapped heroine, and the morally questionable hero who immediately regrets his dastardly deed. Why? Because she's far from the meek and easy captive he was expecting. She fights him at every turn, and never gives him a moment's peace. Who doesn't love a fiery Scottish woman who puts the brooding hero in his place, and mends his broken pieces back together again?

Mailie is the daughter of Tristan and Isobel from Seduced by a Highlander in the Children of the Mist series. (I really enjoyed meeting her parents in this one, so I'm looking forward to reading their book when I get a chance.) Even though there were a lot of people in her family, and an well established history that I wasn't caught up on, I never felt like I was floundering under an information dump. We got just enough facts to satisfy faithful followers and intrigue new readers at the same time. The focus was purely on Mailie and Lachlan, and I really appreciated that. At 400 pages, it was still a fast and compulsively readable story.

Lachlan is a very tortured man after losing his wife and daughter two years before. Not only does he feel as if he failed to protect them, but his revenge on those who murdered them leaves him feeling as if he's only a shell of the man he once was.

Revenge was a terrible passion that began in men and ended in monsters.

It took him years to find the men responsible and take their lives, but the satisfaction that brought him was only fleeting. He now lives a very secluded and lonely life, void of warmth and family to share it with.

From the start, his broody exterior didn't fool me. Underneath all of his pain lay a devastated man just trying to make sense of his devastating loss. When presented with the possibility that his daughter may still be alive, it was a ray of hope after so living so long in the darkness. Not very keen on kidnapping an innocent woman, he quickly lets go of his conscience in order to cling to this new hope of his old life. He'd be willing to do anything in order to have his daughter back, and that's what Ranald Sinclair is counting on.

It felt good to run and release his pent-up anger. Anger at the world for producing men like the ones who took his wife and daughter. Men who would withhold help in possibly finding his daughter for payment of a kidnapped lass. Men who would give up their souls in exchange for their hearts. Men like him.

Mailie was just the kind of heroine I like. She can take care of herself in even the most harrowing situations. She was brave, kindhearted, and was pretty much immune to all intimidation tactics that were thrown at her. She's lived a safe and privileged life as her father's pride and joy, but that didn't mean she was spoiled or filled with her own self-importance. When she's unexpectedly taken out of the safety of her family's protection, she vows that not only will she make it back home before being delivered into her rejected suitor's dangerous hands, but her captor will pay the price with his life.

Then something happens as she settles into Lachlan's cold and lonely castle. She begins to understand the desperation that drove him to what he did. Her compassion helps to to see a view of the man that very few are afforded. And suddenly, they are both torn over what they should do, and what they desire more than anything. An impossible dream of a future together.

“Ye think there’s hope fer me, then?” Oh aye, aye, she did think so. Hope that would no doubt be her downfall.

One of the things I loved was seeing how Mailie brought Lily and Will into his home and showed him that there was life after loss. There was room in his heart to love again, and be the father that he once was. He put up the good fight at first, trying to keep his distance and his emotions hardened, but fortunately she isn't one who gives up easily.

I thought I knew what to expect with the ending, and it was comfortably drama free, but there was one thing that really took me by surprise (in a good way). My only complaint was that their romance did feel rushed in my opinion, I would have liked for them to have discovered their feelings over the original month she was supposed to be there instead of a two week period. Their deep feelings didn't seem entirely plausible because of that, but it didn't take much away from my overall enjoyment. The writing style was lovely, the plot was fast-paced, and very sweet. I've found myself a new author to follow, and I'll most definitely be checking out some of the books on her backlist as well.

SYNOPSIS

Violet Vasquez never met her biological father, so learning he left his beloved hockey franchise—the Chicago Rebels—to her is, well, unexpected. Flat broke and close to homeless, Violet is determined to make the most of this sudden opportunity. Except dear old dad set conditions that require she takes part in actually running the team with the half-sisters she barely knows. Working with these two strangers and overseeing a band of hockey-playing lugs is not on her agenda…until she lays eyes on the Rebels captain and knows she has to have him.

Bren St. James has been labeled a lot of things: the Puck Prince, Lord of the Ice, Hell’s Highlander...but it’s the latest tag that’s making headlines: washed-up alcoholic has-been. This season, getting his life back on track and winning the Cup are his only goals. With no time for relationships—except the fractured ones he needs to rebuild with his beautiful daughters—he’s finding it increasingly hard to ignore sexy, all-up-in-his-beard Violet Vasquez. And when he finds himself in need of a nanny just as the playoffs are starting, he’s faced with a temptation he could so easily get hooked on.

For two lost souls, there’s more on the line than just making the best of a bad situation… there might also be a shot at the biggest prize of all: love.

EXCERPT

She blew out a breath that was half growl, picked up a can of Italian wedding soup, and examined the ingredient list like she was studying for a test. Why wasn’t she taking this opportunity to get under his skin using those taunts that tripped off her tongue like sensual ninja knives?

“Have I offended you in some way, Violet?”

Keeping her chin dipped, she shook her head, but it was a shake of disbelief, not of disagreement with his question.

“Violet, look at me.”

Glittering eyes snapped to his, in them a flash of something—a visceral response to his demand—but it was gone so quickly that even the rewind called him a liar.

“Has something happened?”

“Look, St. James, you and I have never meshed, so we don’t need to pretend to get along. We just ran into each other at the store and you ‘saved’ me from the unseemly interest of a fellow shopper. ¡Maravilloso! ¡Gracias!

Now you can take your steel buns and your sexy scowl off in the opposite direction.”

Color flagged her cheeks, making her olive skin glow. She was furious, and he still didn’t know why. He was also furious, and he had a better idea of the reason.

She’d changed the social contract. They’d been moseying along with her teasing and taunting and flirting, and him acting like it was the worst thing ever to happen to him. Like Violet’s attention was a fresh slice of hell, because in a way it was. She reminded him of everything he couldn’t have. She reminded him of the man he used to be. His body came alive around her, and alive was dangerous. Alive was the opposite of numb, and numb was his best defense against the demons whispering in his ear.

One drink won’t hurt. Thirst like yours can’t be quenched with anything but whiskey.

If he allowed himself to want her, it was a slippery slope to succumbing to the demons at the door. Of course he couldn’t tell her this, so instead he latched on to her words.

“Steel buns?” There was also “sexy scowl,” but he figured he’d start with the ass stuff.

She rolled her eyes, then coasted those same eyes down his body, half hidden by the grocery cart. “As if you don’t know.”

“That I have an ass you could bounce a puck off of?” He twisted to check himself out. “S’pose I do, lass.”

She burst out laughing and muttered something in Spanish.

“What’s that?”

“Not for your ears, Scot.”

One day she’d tell him. One day, he’d get it out of her, preferably while her body arched into his and his body drove into hers.

Chapter 1

“I’ve finished my free trial of adulthood and am no longer interested, so please cancel my subscription.” From The Mixed Up Files of Tilly’s journal.

Tilly Adams sat in the vet’s office staring at the doctor in shock. “Say that again?”

Dr. Janet Lyons smiled. “I think Leo faked being sick. Probably so you’d stay home from work today.”

Tilly looked down at Leo. “You do know he’s a dog, right?”

All six pounds of him smiled up at her. About a month ago, she found him on a street corner hiding beneath a bus bench; wet, dirty, cold, hungry and matted. He’d been Dobby meets Gremlin meets neglected, abused Care Bear. Tilly had looked around for an adult, and then had to remind herself that at twenty-five years old, she was legal herself. So then she’d searched for an adultier adult, but she’d been the only one in sight.

So she’d scooped the little guy up and had brought him to the SPCA, who’d said he was about five weeks old, a possible Maltipoo, which meant he came by his care bear look naturally. He was malnutritioned and suffering from mange. They’d said they’d do what they could, and Tilly had turned to go. That had been when she’d seen all the eyes on her from an endless row of cages … and she’d realized her care bear would soon be sitting in one too. Then she’d heard herself offer to foster him until they found him a forever home.

They’d found him one too. Tilly had signed the adoption papers last weekend in spite of the fact that just that morning he’d escaped his crate, eaten her favorite sneakers, destroyed her favorite pillow, and then yakked up the stuffing from the pillow.

He was a destructo of the highest magnitude, and something else too. He had no idea how small he was. He went after her sister Quinn’s twenty-plus pound cat and her neighbor’s hundred pound black lab with the same fierce, fearless gusto. Turned out, the little guy had a bad case of small-man syndrome, which was how he’d earned his name.

Leo, short for Napoleon.

And now on top of Leo’s impressive chewing skills, his escape artist skills, and his ability to get up on her bed and yet still not understand why stepping in his own poop was annoying, he had a new skill.

He’d faked being sick.

Proud of himself, Leo smiled up at her. Smiled. An hour ago he’d been coughing and limping and acting all sorts of odd. Now he just kept smiling up at her while sending her meaningful glances at the open dog biscuit bin between her and the doctor.

Dr. Lyons laughed and gave him one.

“Dogs can’t fake sick,” Tilly said while Leo inhaled the biscuit whole before licking the floor to make sure he got all the crumbs. “Can they?”

Dr. Lyons scooped him up and gave him a kiss on his adorable snout. “Yours did.”
Tilly sighed. It was too early for this. She’d had a crazy late night. Not hanging at Whiskey River, the local bar and grill. Not at a club with friends. Not working on her designs for he upcoming graphic art showing.

Nope, she’d been on a serious stress bender -- a marathon of Game Of Thrones. She hadn’t fallen asleep until after two and her alarm had interrupted her in the middle of a really great dream starring Jon Snow.

Dr. Lyons handed Leo over. He immediately snuggled into the crook of Tilly’s neck and dammit, her cold heart melted on the spot and she hugged him close. “You’re sure he’s okay? He was coughing. And then he limped funny. And then he wouldn’t eat.”

“But he hasn’t coughed once that I’ve seen. And he’s not limping either. And you said all his food vanished while you took a quick shower.”

“Yes,” Tilly said.

Dr. Lyons waited for her to catch up.

Tilly sighed. “He really did fake me out.”
