The Gravity of Us by Brittainy C. Cherry

Release Date: April 13th, 2017 Genre: Contemporary Romance

Graham Russell and I weren’t made for one another.
I was driven by emotion; he was apathetic. I dreamed while he lived in nightmares. I cried when he had no tears to shed.
Despite his frozen heart and my readiness to run, we sometimes shared seconds. Seconds when our eyes locked and we saw each other’s secrets. Seconds when his lips tasted my fears, and I breathed in his pains. Seconds when we both imagined what it would be like to love one another.
Those seconds left us floating, but when reality knocked us sideways, gravity forced us to descend.
Graham Russell wasn’t a man who knew how to love, and I wasn’t a woman who knew how to either. Yet if I had the chance to fall again, I’d fall with him forever.
Even if we were destined to crash against solid ground.

Review

The Elements series has come to be one of my all time favorite series. I look forward to each book with growing anticipation and excitement, so it's really bittersweet to see this amazing journey come to a close. Graham and Lucy's story was not just a simple straightforward romance from point A to point B. It was more about the exploration of different types of love, in all the forms and expressions you can experience. The love between blood family. Chosen family. Sisters, fathers, daughters. And how it can make you fly or fall from one breath to the next. This was a slow burn, forbidden romance. And when it all pulled together in the end, it was a thing of beauty.

We weren't supposed to feel this way. We weren't supposed to fall for one another, she and I. Yet it seemed gravity had a way of pulling us together.

Graham Russell is a very emotionally wounded man who learned to shut off his emotions in order to avoid pain.

He may have followed in his father's footsteps and become an author, but that's where their relationship ended. His childhood was a minefield of hurt, resentment, and feelings of abandonment by those who ever showed him love. Is it any wonder than the concept of giving love, of showing love became equivalent to weakness? He's just fine writing his bestsellers, closed off from the world, and the foolish people who allow themselves to be vulnerable.

Lucy Palmer was the complete opposite of Graham. Free spirited, filled with joy and exuberance for life. She gave all of herself, never holding back or concealing how bright she could shine.

When these two come face to face for the first time, it's actually comical how their personalities clash with one another. Surprisingly, though he is extremely rude and cold at the start, there was never a point where I disliked him or got angry at his behavior. Brittainy Cherry knows how to develop characters to make them human. She brings us up close and personal, scars and all. So when we see them thrive and become whole again, it's even more rewarding and precious.

Seeing Graham slowly soften and express himself with those around him will melt your heart. Lucy showed him how to open himself to the beauty around him and experience the world through her eyes. But he was also her solid ground to stand on when she lost her footing. Together they were balanced and completely in harmony. But there were those who couldn't understand or accept them, and they had to fight to find their forever.

Yes, I ended up loving this story, just as I have with every book by this author. But for a large portion of the book, I wasn't completely there where I should have been. I almost felt detached, and I can't really pinpoint why to be honest. There was one point where I should have been a sobbing mess and there was nothing. Let me tell you though...the last 25% of the book packs one magnificently powerful blow. It was pure beauty how she tied each piece of the story together. And too see how their love that was planted, grew and flourished to be strong and full of faith.

My early reticence is most likely entirely on me, so don't let that dissuade you. Brittainy has another winner on her hands, there is no doubt in my mind that everyone will fall for this very unique and special couple.
