Dear Lady Truelove . . .
My twin brother and I need a new mother, though Papa insists he’ll never marry again. Must be nice, brainy, and fond of cats . . .
Lady Truelove may be London’s most famous advice columnist, but James St. Clair, the Earl of Kenyon, knows his wild young sons need a tutor, not a new mother. They need a man tough enough to make his hellions tow the line, and James is determined to find one.
Miss Amanda Leighton, former schoolteacher and governess, knows she has all the qualifications to be a tutor. And while female tutors are unheard of, Amanda isn’t about to lose the chance at her dream job because of pesky details like that. Jamie isn’t sure what to make of his new employee, until he realizes the shocking truth—beneath the ill-fitting suits, his boys’ tutor is a woman. Excerpt: Governess Gone Rogue by Laura Lee Guhrke

Chapter 1
London, 1893

“And she’s off.”

Ten-year-old Owen St. Clair moved to stand alongside

his brother, propped his elbows on the windowsill,

and rested his chin in his hands as he watched their now-former

nanny, a stern, black-clad widow named Mrs. Hornsby, step into the hansom cab at the

curb below. “We’re to blame, you know.”

“Stuff.” Colin, older than his brother by exactly

eighteen minutes, shook his head, a decisive move

that sent the unruly strands of his carrot-red

hair into further disarray. “It’s not our fault the Hornsby doesn’t

like frogs.”

“Well, we did put it in her hatbox.” Owen sighed as

the cab containing Mrs. Hornsby turned at the corner and vanished from view. “Three nannies in six

months. I think that’s torn it, Colin. Papa said one more nanny and he’d send us to Harrow.”

At the ghastly prospect of being sent off to school, the twins turned, sliding down to sit on the floor of the library, their backs to the wall beneath the window as they contemplated what could well be their immediate future.

“We can’t let Papa send us away,” Colin said at last.

“He’d be lost without us. And what would happen to Oscar?”

Both boys looked up at the gray tabby cat that was sitting on the arm of a nearby chair, a cat they’d rescued from a tree in the park two years earlier. Oscar was twitching his tail and blinking his green eyes

sleepily, seeming unaware of the dire future that lay ahead for his two human friends.

“He’ll be lonely,” Owen said. “Papa’s away all the time, and the servants think he’s a nuisance because

he doesn’t chase mice. They don’t like him. They might forget to feed him. They might give him away.”

“We’ve got to do something to stop it.”

“Maybe we could take him with us? It’s probably against the rules to have a cat at Harrow, but—”

“I’m not talking about Oscar.” Colin turned to his brother. “I’m talking about us and being sent away.

Oscar has nothing to worry about if we can convince Papa to let us stay here.”

There was silence for a moment as both boys considered the problem.

“Maybe,” Owen said at last, “we could find our new nanny ourselves before Papa knows what’s happened. Someone we like. Someone fun. If we do that, it’s a fate . . . fate—what’s the word?”

“Fait-accompli,” Colin supplied in carefully enunciated, very British French.

“That’s it.” Owen’s nod was decisive. “And if we’ve already found someone, Papa can’t be too angry about Nanny Hornsby leaving, can he?”

“Maybe not, but the thing is . . .” Colin paused, his freckled face scrunching up with distaste, as if he’d

just eaten a persimmon. “We don’t really want another nanny, do we?”

“No, but what other choice have we got?”

“Maybe we should find what we really want.”

“You mean . . .” Owen stared at his brother, his expression one of both excitement and doubt. “You don’t mean a new mum?”

“Why not? We’ve been talking about it for ages.”

“I know, but—”

“Another nanny would be tiresome. School would be worse.”

“That’s true, but—”

“Papa’s sure to marry again sometime,” Colin interrupted.

“What if he picks someone who doesn’t like us?”

“We’d be off to Harrow like a shot. But still—”

“If we find Papa someone who likes us, she could convince him to let us give school a miss altogether.”

“Possibly,” Owen said, his voice making it clear he wasn’t optimistic about such a plan’s chances of success. “But Papa won’t ever marry again. He’s said so a thousands of times.”

“We’ll have to find him a girl who’s smashing enough to make him change his mind. Someone pretty, of course.”

“Someone nice. Someone who won’t put pomade in our hair and lecture us when our trousers get torn.”

Colin nodded. “She’ll have to be brainy, too, like Mama was. And fond of cats.”

Oscar meowed, as if giving his endorsement of this plan.

“There’s just one problem,” Owen pointed out.

“How do we find her?”

“That is the sticky wicket.”

Both boys fell silent again, thinking hard.

“We could put an ad in Auntie Clara’s paper,” Owen said after a moment. “Men are always advertising for wives in the papers.”

“Gentlemen don’t, and Papa’s a gentleman. Wait—I know!” Colin jumped to his feet and crossed the library to the writing desk. As his brother watched, he opened the center drawer, retrieved a sheet of notepaper, and closed the drawer again.

“What are you doing?” Owen asked curiously, standing up and moving toward the desk as his brother

reached for the pen that was reposing in a silver holder on the inkstand.

“Who are you writing to?”

“Who does everyone write to when they want to solve a problem?” Colin countered as he inked the nib

of the pen. “I’m writing to Lady Truelove.”

Those who wanted to be polite would have deemed Amanda Leighton a woman of the world. Those not so inclined to civility would have called her something else, something much less romantic.

Either way, facts were facts, and though by the age of twenty-eight Amanda had lived in two different

countries, earned a university education, found a profession, taken a lover, and lost her reputation, she had not gained the one experience society deemed worthwhile for those of her sex. Amanda had never managed to acquire a husband. But then, she’d never really been in search of one. Her mother had died when she was a young girl, and she’d been raised by her father, a university professor who had scorned the traditional, marriage-minded, downright silly scope of a girl’s learning, and who had personally given Amanda a first-class education worthy of any boy. More important, he’d taught her to take charge of her own destiny, not by the use of feminine wiles, but by the employment of her intelligence.

Review: 99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

Readers and critics alike raved over USA Today bestselling author Sally Thorne’s smash hit debut,The Hating Game, which has sold in over 20 countries. Now she’s back with an unforgettable romantic comedy about a woman who finally has a shot at her long time crush—if she dares.

99 PERCENT MINE by SALLY THORNE
Series: Standalone
Release date: January 29, 2019
Cliffhanger: No
Genre: contemporary romance, rom-com

SYNOPSIS

Crush: a strong and often short-lived infatuation, particularly for someone beyond your reach…

Darcy Barrett has undertaken a global survey of men. She’s travelled the world, and can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that Darcy’s twin brother Jamie saw him first and claimed him forever as his best friend. Despite Darcy’s best efforts, Tom’s off limits and loyal to her brother, 99%. That’s the problem with finding her dream man at age eight and peaking in her photography career at age twenty—ever since, she’s had to learn to settle for good enough.

When Darcy and Jamie inherit a tumble-down cottage from their grandmother, they’re left with strict instructions to bring it back to its former glory and sell the property. Darcy plans to be in an aisle seat halfway across the ocean as soon as the renovations start, but before she can cut and run, she finds a familiar face on her porch: house-flipper extraordinaire Tom’s arrived, he’s bearing power tools, and he’s single for the first time in almost a decade.

Suddenly Darcy’s considering sticking around to make sure her twin doesn’t ruin the cottage’s inherent magic with his penchant for grey and chrome. She’s definitely not staying because of her new business partner’s tight t-shirts, or that perfect face that's inspiring her to pick up her camera again. Soon sparks are flying—and it’s not the faulty wiring. It turns out one percent of Tom’s heart might not be enough for Darcy anymore. This time around, she’s switching things up. She’s going to make Tom Valeska 99 percent hers.

REVIEW

99 Percent Mine99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I think anyone who has read The Hating Game was positively twitching with impatience for more of this author's addictive words. I was late to the party in reading her debut book, but when I did I finally understood the hype. A lot of times it's purely good marketing or a popularity contest that builds such a level of excitement, but this author is a rare talent that deserves every bit of her accolades. Thorne has such a distinct, sharp voice that sinks its claws in you and drags you into the story from page one. She has a fantastic sense of metaphorical humor that you can't help but laugh out loud at from the visual imagery. Tough as nails Darcy getting hit on by a sleazeball at work:

“What time do you get off work?” I imagine a Ken doll left out in the sun too long, and I step on that soft tan head like it’s a cigarette. “Not for a million years.”

This book is about the dysfunctional relationship between Darcy, her twin brother Jamie, and his best friend Tom. They grew up together and he became as close as a sibling, but with that close relationship came a lot of headaches. Because Darcy and Jamie are like two alley cats fighting for dominance. They're competitive, territorial, and yes, immature. They both have very large personalities that clash at the drop of a hat. Poor Tom is pushed into the role of a placater, a referee to smooth over their squabbles. He's pulled in two different directions because he loves both of them, and not only wants peace, but to make them both happy. Always. You see, Tom? He's a people pleaser and an all around perfect specimen of a man. He doesn't like that word applied to him because he feels incapable of living up to it, but the man has a heart of gold that shines brighter than the sun.

Simply put, I adored Tom for so many reasons. He takes care of everyone around him, and has a sense of responsibility that is almost crushing in its weight. He's protective, caring, and though he's human with weaknesses like everyone else, his determination to do the right thing in the core of who he is. There were points in the book where I felt that the twins didn't deserve him. Yep, I was holding a grudge and getting mama bear protective over Tom because I could not see an even exchange in their relationship. I felt that he was taken for granted and treated like a favorite toy that they didn't want to share. In the beginning of the book, I was more than a little concerned that my frustrations would overwhelm my feelings for the romance. I bow down to Thorne's talent because she completely flipped me around and made me believe in the future of their friendships and the romance that developed.

With any friends to lovers story, or brother's best friend trope, there's a shift in the dynamic between those involved. There are fears about destroying what you already have if the romance fails, and insecurity about losing any piece of importance in that person's life. That's where the title 99% Mine comes in. In the beginning, Darcy tells us that when she was 18, Tom was 100% hers. But she messed up big time and now she wants to belong to him again. At least 99%. For the first time, they are alone in her late grandmother's house without her brother there to cause friction. When she finds out that he's suddenly become single after eight long years, it doesn't take her long to blurt out an indecent proposal. She's carried a torch for him for a very long time, and having temptation in front of her is like gasoline on a banked fire.

Darcy is blunt, in your face snarky, and knows how to out-alpha any man or woman you set in front of her. Her heart condition doesn't slow her down, and she doesn't allow it to alter how others treat her. Tom doesn't stand a chance once she sets her mind on making him hers. What did I love about her? Well, I would be hard pressed to think of things in the beginning but the woman had strength. She had a terrible habit of running from uncomfortable feelings and situations, but her stubborn ways weren't impenetrable. I didn't give up on her and throughout the book, I saw her softening, listening to others, and working hard to overcome her faults. I saw huge character growth, and by the end I understood her in a way that helped me empathize with her more.

One of my favorite things about the book was Darcy's best friend Truly Nicholson. Curvy, sassy, and one heck of a businesswoman, she was such a unique character that I can't wait to read more about. She has her own brand of underwear with snarky phrases sewn across the booty. She seems to be just as unfiltered as Darcy, but in a much more approachable way. I fell for her immediately, and with the tease of her upcoming story that's revealed at the end, I'm even more excited for Thorne's next book!! Jamie is pretty much an egotistical player who has a mean side, but there is genuine promise there. I can see who he'll turn out to be with a little polish and buffing away. I have full faith that I will enjoy every minute as I witness him being brought to his knees.

99 Percent Mine was a delight to read. I laughed out loud too many times to count, and it has cemented my love for this author's work. If you haven't read her books yet, you are missing out on a one of a kind experience. Though I did have some initial frustrations, I never once was tempted to quit because you can't help but become invested in these perfectly imperfect characters. You're guaranteed to feel the whole gamut of emotions as Tom and Darcy fight for their happily ever after.

Recommended for: readers who love rom-coms, friends to lovers, best friend's brother, and slow burn romantic tension.

A guy like that is strong in a way that’s deeper than muscle and bones, because he wears his softness on the outside. I think I met my ideal man when I was eight, and no one else has ever measured up.

“Chokshi has created an inclusive and authentic cast with obvious chemistry and affection for one another and infuses the tale with witty banter and twists. A delectably intriguing adventure for all teen shelves.” — School Library Journal, Starred Review

“Evocative writing, sumptuous set pieces, and vividly sketched, authentically flawed characters distinguish this immersive tale of found family and star-crossed romance. Kaleidoscopic narration complements the intricate, high-stakes plot and allows Chokshi to showcase numerous aspects of her richly imagined universe all the way to the closing cliff-hanger.” — Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

REVIEW

The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1)The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wolves were everywhere. In politics, on thrones, in beds. They cut their teeth on history and grew fat on war. Not that Séverin was complaining. It was just that, like other wolves, he wanted his share.

I wanted to read this book because it was giving me a Six of Crows vibe and I'm always here for that. I've tried other stories that I thought would be similar, but they always fell far short of the magnificence of Bardugo's world building and pacing. This is the first time where I can say that I've found a YA fantasy/adventure that actually comes close. The detail and layers to the world building were incredibly well done. The magic system is complex, and there is an information dump in this book that took me a bit to work my way through. But once I situated myself with the characters and setting, it was smooth reading.

The story centers around a group of five friends in late 19th century Paris: Séverin, Laila, Tristan, Zofia, and Enrique. They're a band of thieves who work together against a powerful society called The Order of Babel. All of them feel like an outsider in Parisian society for their own reasons, but together they are all treated as equals. Séverin is a wealthy hotel owner who leads them, but also takes on a protective role. They're not just friends, they've become more like family. The dynamic between this group was loving, teasing, and above all accepting. I really enjoyed the humor and witty dialogue between the group. It had a sarcastic, snarky edge that really entertained me.

As part of the Montagnet-Alarie line, Séverin should have been the patriarch of the House of Vanth with a place of power and untouchable influence in the city. The greed of others has stripped him of his inheritance, and he's bound and determined to forcibly take back what's rightfully his by whatever means necessary. As treasure hunters, they all use their personal gifts and skill sets to pull off their heists. Abilities in engineering, mathematics, forging, history, and reading an object for information help them plan and make their acquisitions. In the beginning of the book, you're thrown right into one of their schemes that doesn't go quite as planned. They've been made, and a deal must be struck in order to extricate themselves. It could either win them everything they've been fighting for, or destroy them. Their whole future hinges on the outcome.

I don’t want them to look us in the eye. I want them to look away, to blink harshly, like they’ve stared at the sun itself. I don’t want them standing across from us. I want them kneeling."

I had a soft spot for Zofia. While she was a genius at engineering and solving mathematical puzzles, when it came to social cues and interactions she had difficulty. She exhibited many of the signs of being on the autism spectrum, but her condition wouldn't have been understood or accepted during that time period. My heart went out to her because she was so hard on herself for not understanding people, or how to behave in a way that everyone else did effortlessly. Often people would misinterpret her as cold, because she distanced herself to prevent her inevitable social mistakes. I loved how Laila befriended her, and took the time to know her quirks so well that she could make her feel at ease.

Laila was probably the most intriguing character for me. She's a famous cabaret dancer known as L’Enigme. The public sees only what she wants them to see: sultry, exotic, and captivating. There's much, much more to her and it goes well beyond her surface looks. Laila is hiding a dark history, and it may kill her one day soon if she isn't able to uncover the secrets of her unorthodox birth. She's a loner who feels she can't afford to allow anyone to see who she really is. Séverin is the one person who seems to know her better than anyone else. Their one night stand was a weak moment that got through her defenses, and now she's in denial over her deeper feelings for him. Their attraction to each other was the kind of slow burn, taut sexual tension that I love to read in fantasy. It was glaringly clear that they both couldn't let go of how attracted they were, and their feelings would not be tamped down no matter how hard they pushed.

It seemed the world couldn’t help but want to be near her . . . every beam of light, pair of eyes, atom of air. Maybe that’s why sometimes he couldn’t breathe around her.

Tristan was the youngest of the group and the closest to Séverin. They're not related by blood, but were raised together and are brothers in the truest sense of the word. Séverin is highly protective of him, and has made a vow to himself that he will not only keep him safe, but finally give him a secure home when he finally gets his inheritance back. Tristan was a sweet and quirky character that created a pet spider, created awe inspiring things, and had the whole group wrapped around his finger. But like pretty much every character introduced, there was quite a bit more to him than expected which comes to light later in the book. One thing I didn't really get about the two brothers' shared history was their seven "fathers" who were named after the seven deadly sins. That could have been explained more in depth for my liking through the flashbacks.

The main conflict regarding the Babel fragment and the Fallen House was one that I can genuinely see taking a full trilogy to resolve. This faction of The Order that was ruthlessly cut out was really creep-tastic. Harnessing the power of the dead, and aiming to become God-like creatures to "purify" humanity, they were disturbing to say the least. Sometimes I think plots are too thinned out to stretch over a three book arc, but this one has so many strings left dangling. This was a promising start to the series that fans of fantasy with an intricately drawn, diverse cast of characters will love.

EXCERPT

“Sadie.”

She shook her head.

“Look at me. Please?”

It was the damn please that had her opening her eyes. He’d closed the gap so that if she so much as took a breath, they’d be touching.

So she did just that. She took a deep breath, and then their bodies were up against each other, his warm and hard. Everywhere. “What’s happening?” she whispered.

“I believe you’re deciding between kicking me in the nuts and kissing me.” One side of his mouth curved very slightly as he lifted their still joined hands above her head, against the wall.

“But that last part might just be in my dreams.”

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Yes, it’s just in my dreams?”

She meant to say yes again, she really did.

She even opened her mouth to say it, because this was insane, this incredible . . . craving she had for him. It made no sense. Less than no sense, and yet . . .

She went up on tiptoe and touched her mouth to his.

REVIEW

Be the GirlBe the Girl by K.A. Tucker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Series: Standalone
Release date: January 21, 2019
Cliffhanger: No
Genre: YA, contemporary romance

This was a really hard one for me to rate. To say that I have mixed feelings is a huge understatement, most especially about the main character Aria. I read a lot of young adult books with teenage characters, so her age isn't an issue in general. I knew this would be set in high school with personalities and problems related to that transitional time in life. It's what you would expect with a coming of age story. I'm not going to lie though, Aria was 15 years old for the majority of the book and at times her personality was more silly than what appeals to me in YA.

✒︎ I tend to zone out and miss notes. I can’t help it, though. He has a hot neck. I didn’t think that was a thing, but it is definitely a thing.
✒︎I think I like Emmett. Like, REALLY like him. But maybe you already guessed that. He’s easily the hottest guy in school. Maybe on earth.

Age appropriate, yes. Relatable to me at this time in my life, no. Her reaction to Emmett was your typical giddy schoolgirl crush on the hot popular jock. It didn't have a huge impact on my overall enjoyment, but I was finding it hard to connect with her because of it. That's just a personal preference though, so it's not going to phase everyone.

On the other hand, Aria seemed to have maturity in some ways that were beyond her years that I respected. After moving to Eastmonte with her mother to start fresh, they meet their new neighbors, Emmett and Cassie Hartford. Cassie is close to their age, but is on the autism spectrum and there is a childlike innocence to her that makes her different than your average high school student. Not only does Aria immediately show her respect, but she goes out of her way to include her and offer her friendship. At school, rather than joining a clique, she befriends people who are a little bit odd. The people whom everyone else doesn't take the time to know as a person before passing judgement and censure. So she may have been a bit giddy, but I really started to warm up to her.

I would say that the main theme of this book is bullying/cyberbullying and it really shed light on the devastation it can cause. So many teens take part in tormenting others and making their life a living hell, and don't think about the consequences of their actions. Treating their hateful behavior as if it's a game, they don't think that the worst possible case scenario can result from what they're doing. With how prevalent this social epidemic is now more than ever on social media, I applaud the author for tackling it.

Everyone has an ugly side. It’s only ever a matter of how well they keep it hidden, and what makes it appear.

Throughout the book, there are lots of clues that Aria has run from some sort of scandal that resulted in some mental health issues. She tries to compartmentalize her old life from her "new" one, and convince herself that with her new school, all of her old problems are erased. In other words, she's in denial big time. Avoiding the uncomfortable feelings she doesn't want to focus on anymore, and trying to reinvent herself. I just knew that somehow the skeletons in her closet would be uncovered, and it was only a matter of time before she had to confront them again. Then the twist finally comes and knocks you off your feet. No way, no how did I expect the secret that she was hiding! It took me completely off guard and shocked me. It was something that had me re-evaluating everything I thought about her up until that point.

I debated with myself if I could even like this heroine after finishing, and whether or not she fully showed character growth to suit me. Some of her actions at her new school showed that despite everything she was trying to put behind her, she still made careless choices she shouldn't have. But I came to the conclusion that I suppose it doesn't really matter what my opinion is of her in the end. The message is impactful, and it was told in a way that makes you sit up and pay attention. Be the Girl explores a lot of light things that typical teens would feel and experience in young love. It also digs into a heavy topic, showing the permanent effect bullying can wreak on lives. It's a story that many will not only appreciate, but need to hear.

The Hail Mary
Waiting Series Book 3
Adult Contemporary Romance, Coming of Age Trilogy

Sixteen years is a long time. In a marriage, it’s a milestone. On the gridiron, it’s a miracle. Reed Johnson wants more time for everything, but time is funny that way.

It can be cruel.

With a body that can’t quite take the hits it used to and a heart tired of being torn in two different directions, Reed is faced with a reality he’s not quite ready for—life without the game. He became a man under Friday night game lights and in college stadium tunnels, and without the grit and the glory that’s earned ten yards at a time, he’s afraid of what kind of man he’ll be.

But there’s more than a game at stake now.

Reed’s wife, Nolan, is afraid too. She’s seen what can happen when the love of her life pushes himself too hard, and she can’t escape the nightmares she relives after almost losing her entire world to one single play on the field.

There is no compromise when it comes to football. Same goes for the heart. You’re either all in, or you get crushed. For Reed and Nolan, the clock is ticking down. Time…it does that. One way or another, they’re going to have to make a choice.

This is their hail Mary.

This is win or lose.

(The Hail Mary is book 3 in The Waiting Series, which follows high school sweethearts Reed Johnson and Nolan Lennox through football, life, love and everything messy that goes along with it. The series begins with Waiting on the Sidelines and Going Long.)
