EXCERPT

My order appears and I straighten, intending to claim my coffee and find a seat, when a pretty twenty-something brunette races forward in a puff of sweet, floral-scented perfume, and grabs it.

“Miss,” I begin, “that’s—”

She takes a sip and grimaces. “What is this?” She turns to the counter. “Excuse me,” she calls out. “My drink is wrong.”

“Because it’s not your drink,” Karen reprimands her, setting a new cup on the counter. “This is your drink.” She reaches for my cup and turns it around, pointing to the name scribbled on the side. “This one’s for Shane.” She glances at me. “I’ll be right back to fix this. I have another customer.”

I wave my acknowledgment and she hurries away, while my floral-scented coffee thief faces me, her porcelain cheeks flushed, her full, really damn distracting mouth, painted pink. “I’m so sorry,” she offers quickly. “I thought I was the only one without my coffee and I was in a hurry.” She starts to hand me my coffee and then quickly sets it on the counter. “You can’t have that. I drank out of it.”

“I saw that,” I say, picking it up. “You grimaced with disgust after trying it.”

Her eyes, a pale blue that matches the short-sleeved silk blouse, go wide. “Oh. I mean no. Or I did, but not because it’s a bad cup of coffee. It’s just very strong.”

“It’s a triple-shot latte.”

“A triple,” she says, looking quite serious. “Did you know that in some third- world countries they bottle that stuff and sell it as a way to grow hair on your chest.” She lowers her voice and whispers, “That’s not a good look for me.”

“Fortunately,” I say in the midst of a chuckle I would have claimed wasn’t possible five minutes ago, “I don’t share that dilemma.” I lift my cup and add, “Cheers,” before taking a drink, the heavy, rich flavor sliding over my tongue.

She pales, looking exceedingly uncomfortable, before repeating, “I drank from that cup.”

“I know,” I say, offering it back to her. “Try another drink.”

She takes the cup and sets it on the counter. “I can’t drink that. And you can’t either.” She points to the hole on top, now smudged pink. “My lipstick is all over it and I really hate to tell you this but it’s all over you too and . . .” She laughs, a soft, sexy sound, her hands settling on her slender, but curvy hips, accented by a fitted black skirt. “Sorry. I don’t mean to laugh, but it’s not a good shade for you.”

I laugh now too, officially and impossibly charmed by this woman in spite of being in the middle of what feels like World War III. “Seems you know how to make a lasting impression.”

“Thankfully it’s not lasting,” she says. “It’ll wipe right off. And thank you for being such a good sport. I really am sorry again for all of this.”

“Apologize by getting it off me.”

Confusion puckers her brow. “What?”

“You put it on me.” I grab a napkin from the counter and offer it to her. “You get it off.”

“I put it on the cup,” she says, clearly recovering her quick wit. “You put it on you.”

“I assure you, that had I put it on me, we both would have enjoyed it much more than we are now.” I glance at the napkin.

“Are you going to help me?”

Her cheeks flush and she hugs herself, her sudden shyness an intriguing contrast to her confident banter. “I’ll let you know if you don’t get it all.”

My apparently lipstick- stained lips curve at her quick wit but I take the napkin and wipe my mouth, arching a questioning brow when I’m done. She points to the corner of my mouth. “A little more on the left.”

I hand her the napkin. “You do it.”

She inhales, as if for courage, but takes it. “Fine,” she says, stepping closer, that wicked sweet scent of hers teasing my nostrils. Wasting no time, she reaches for my mouth, her body swaying in my direction while my hand itches to settle at her waist. I want this woman and I’m not letting her get away.

“There,” she says, her arm lowering, and not about to let her escape, I capture her hand, holding it and the napkin between us.

Those gorgeous pale blue eyes of hers dart to mine, wide with surprise, the connection sparking an unmistakable charge between us…

The Dirty Money series has snagged my full attention with its first powerful installment Hard Rules. There was conniving and back stabbing around every corner and I never fully knew who was trustworthy, if anyone. I felt like I was constantly being forced to decipher every word, action, and nuance of the story in an effort to keep my head above water as to where the plot was unfolding. Every character was a piece on a chess board being moved around strategically by the author and the only question was who would finally be the victor?

The war that Shane Brandon is waging against his family is a war that he's determined to win. and finally wash their empire clean of the filth that has tarnished it. Lack of morals, greed, and power struggles are characteristics that I would attribute to the environment that he's become trapped in.

After returning to Detroit to save his shady family from serious legal trouble, he knows his job isn't done, no matter how hard he wants it to be true. As much as he wishes he could return back to New York and his ideal life as a corporate lawyer, his inability to give up on his family holds him strong. His father is seriously ill, and he's not willing to allow himself the freedom of turning his back on everything.

Shane's not afraid of a monumental fight, but he is feeling weary of the daily power struggle. When he runs into Emily in a coffee shop, he's immediately attracted to her refreshingly sweet nature. What is first supposed to be a passionate one-night stand quickly flares and burns out of control. Neither was expecting to see each other again, neither expected to care. But they were wrong on both counts.

"You rock my world and I don't get rocked. I'm damn sure going to do my best to make you do this my way."
"Which is what?"
"You stay with me." I lower my mouth a breath from hers. "Stay."

Emily is on the run, hiding her true identity and with every day, we see her indecision grow over whether or not she should continue to selfishly potentially lay a whole new set of problems on Shane. Knowing she may be a serious danger to those around her if her house of cards come tumbling down is consuming her with guilt. On the other hand, Shane is making her feel more understood and connected to another person more than any other time in her life. She may not reveal much to him, but he's a shrewd man and sees the truth in her eyes. They're more alike than either could have anticipated.

We are one in this moment, two people lost and found in each other, both of us fighting a battle the other understands in ways no one else can.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between these two. She was a great heroine who knew how push back when his control started to reach too far out of the bedroom. Working in close proximity, she's able to hold her own amongst the deceit and hidden agendas.

And though he had his moments of arrogance and pushiness, it all came from a place of protection. They both had secrets and were surrounded by lies, but with each other were able to find a safe oasis from the mind games they both had to play.

Hard Rules was a very promising start to the series. I felt like I was tossed around in a pool of sharks on the hunt for blood. There was quite a cliffhanger at the end, but with a four book series, I'm sure most people will be expecting that. I know even without the suspense and uncertainty of what's to come, I would still be on board with continuing with the next book.

*Damage Control is scheduled for release in February of next year.

Review: Forged in Smoke by Trish McCallan

Title: Forged in Smoke
Series: Red-Hot SEALs #3
Author: Trish McCallan
Release date: July 19, 2016
Cliffhanger: Yes
Rating: 4.5 stars

Synopsis:

Faith Ansell could never be mistaken for an action hero. The scientist is content in her lab, working with her team on life-changing discoveries. But when a mysterious organization captures her colleagues, she’s forced to flee for her life with SEAL Team 7.

Lieutenant Seth “Rawls” Rawlings, ST7’s corpsman, hasn’t been himself since a near-death experience in the Sierra Nevadas. He’s tense and distracted, and the team caught him arguing with himself—loudly. Despite his erratic behavior, Rawls is the only one Faith feels comfortable confiding her life-threatening secret in.

But Rawls has a secret of his own: his wasn’t the only spirit to return to the physical plane when he was resuscitated. At first, Rawls assumed the “ghost” he saw and heard meant he was having a complete mental breakdown. But the apparition soon becomes convincingly real, and what’s more, he may be the key to the conspiracy looming over them. Rawls had better act quickly because ST7’s race to save their reputations—and Faith’s life—is on.

I'm writing this very sheepishly over my laziness. This series is one of my favorite in the Romantic Suspense genre, and my review is long overdue. I remember when I stumbled upon the first book Forged in Fire, four years ago. I had zero expectations starting because it was just a random, unplanned read. But almost immediately, I knew that this author had something special. Once I was introduced to this tough group of alpha SEALs, each more charismatic than the last, I was excitedly adding each of their books to my TBR. The proof of my appreciation is in the time lapse between books. With at least two years' waiting period each time, if these books were forgettable I wouldn't even be writing this right now.

One of the things I love the most about Trish McCallan's writing is that she writes one hell of a unique storyline. It's so richly detailed and complex that it stands apart in comparison to a million others. She knows how to write intensity, nail biting suspense, and well-rounded characters that are heroic and sexy as sin. And on top of that? She manages to mix in a PNR element in each and every book. And lets face it, that's not a simple task when you're integrating it with a bunch of Navy SEALs. It's an odd combination and could easily come off as hokey, but she makes it work, and work well.

It would be impossible to go into fine detail with the plot because while each book has a HFN ending for each couple, overall the continuing story is unresolved. At the risk of giving spoilers for the preceding stories, I'm going to keep the plot summary as brief as I can.

Rawls and his friends and teammates are on the run, being falsely accused of crimes against them after saving countless innocent lives. A secret group run by the financially most powerful in the world have a sick, misguided agenda to "save humanity" from themselves. Killing innocent people is like brushing their teeth in the morning, simply a necessary task. Anyone who dares to step in front of them will not be seeing the light of the next day. They're evil, corrupt, and hold way too much power and influence to be ignored. When these men stumble upon their plot to hijack a plane in book one, their rescue of those passengers set them on a course for disaster. Now in hiding, they unravel the depravity that fuels this group and struggle to find a weakness in their enemies that they can exploit.

Rawls was quite the interesting hero. He's a southern boy with a charming drawl with a background in medicine. He's the pretty boy of the bunch and probably the most mysterious. He holds a lot of himself back, and doesn't let others see what's hiding underneath his easy smile. After a near death experience, he returns to the living with doubts of his own sanity. Either he's lost his mind, or he's now able to see a ghost. And this one is most definitely not of the friendly variety. Once this spirit starts to learn how to move physical objects, it's a dangerous game trying to avoid serious injuries. Rawls will do whatever it takes to keep his friends safe, even if it means distancing himself from everyone.

Faith was a brave and intelligent woman, a scientist forced on the run with them when they rescue her from the New Ruling Order (NRO). She was developing an energy paradigm that had dangerous ramifications if fallen into the wrong hands. What I loved about her was that even though she was quite inexperienced socially, she had a strong backbone and wasn't afraid to speak her mind. She may have been holed up in a laboratory for a good part of her life, but she wasn't meek or cowardly when faced with such an extraordinary situation. Even her heart condition didn't stop her from fighting side by side with everyone else to survive and protect the group.

This book started out strong, giving us a flashback to Rawls' out of body experience when his heart stopped and he attached to his ghostly visitor. I was immediately sucked right back in to the story and loving the new paranormal addition to the series. However, I do think that much of the middle seemed to drag out, leaving me feeling a little impatient for the story to progress. As well, I think the connection between the h/H was rushed and there wasn't much time spent on the actual development of their feelings. The action/suspense took precedence over the romance, and I couldn't help but wish for a little more depth between the two of them.

That being said, I still enjoyed them together and the plot was so engrossing that it didn't phase me much. And Wolf? If he doesn't get his own book, I'll be starting a petition because his story will be the most fascinating yet, hands down. If I have to wait 5 more years to get it, I don't even care.

If you're thinking of reading this, you must read the others in the series first. This isn't one of those that you can read out of order, so make sure you're up to date before you start. If you're looking for something a little outside of the box that's action-packed, look no further. These will most definitely be the ones for you.

Review: Swear on This Life by Renee Carlino

Title: Swear on This Life
Series: Standalone
Author: Renée Carlino
Release date: August 9, 2016
Cliffhanger: No
Rating: 5 stars

Synopsis:

When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J.Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

This is one of those stories that will leave its mark on many readers. I thoroughly consumed this book, not in several mini-meals, but in one huge satisfying bite. Once I started, I was pulled in so completely that I didn't want to set it down. I couldn't set it down. Renée Carlino has a way with words that really reaches down deep and grabs you.

It's a story about a boy and girl both living in a dark and bleak reality, who found friendship and a deep and powerful love. Theirs was a love that transcended poverty, abuse, and years of separation. Nothing could dull the strength of what they felt for one another, and no one else could ever come close to making them forget the immensity of what they lost.

Jase had planted himself inside of my heart so deeply that when we parted he kept growing there.

Her past was off-limits, even to her long term boyfriend. The was so much resentment, hurt, and shame from her upbringing and the events that led to her leaving her small town for good. All she wanted to do was move on and fulfill her dreams of being a writer, but suppressing her emotions was causing her dreams to be unreachable. That long dirt road where hunger, fear, and loneliness overwhelmed her was a road she no longer wanted to travel. She escaped and made a life for herself, a life she was just going through the motions in now.

Even through years of trying to bury the importance of her feelings, one moment brought a flood of emotions back into her neatly ordered life. Emiline's discovery of her life fictionalized and exposed for the world to see left her raw and wounded.

My heart was growing right alongside the pain, and I didn't know what to do with myself.

I really loved the story within a story that we're given. If was such a unique reading experience to view the flashbacks as Emiline was viewing them. As a novel that she was reading and interpreting. What was Jase's motivation in airing all of her most hidden hurts? Was it purely selfish, or something more? These were all questions that spun around in her head and she wasn't going to leave them unanswered.

They made a promise to one another, in another life. But they hadn't seen each there in twelve years, so why drag everything out of the dark, why now? Emiline's turmoil was heart wrenching, but something told me that Jase wasn't the self-serving person whom she believed him to be.

"Jason Dean Colbertson, how'd you get so great?" There was a silence. He kept his eyes closed and said, "You made me this way, Em."

Revisiting her past through her readings opens your eyes to how desperate their situation was. Their last day together was the culmination of a series of misfortunes. An impossible choice had to be made, and that decision altered the course of their lives. At this point in the book, I was desperate to find out Jase's motivations, where his heart lay. I needed to know the ending of their story. Was it a closed door in the past, or were they heading toward a window of opportunity in the future? There were no easy answers. Emaline had a lot of soul searching to do and allow forgiveness to lift the burden on her heart.

For me, Swear on This Life was emotion-packed and beautifully written. Though it falls into the common categories of second chance romance and friends to lovers, nothing about this story is standard fare. It explores several heavy topics but manages to hold that weight without pulling you down along with it. The love that they shared was unquestionable, leaving no doubt in the mind that these two were meant to be. If only they could finally shape their own fates.

Release Blitz: The Summer Games by R.S. Grey

Title: The Summer Games: Out of Bounds
Author: R.S. Grey
Release Date: Aug 1, 2016

I despise Erik Winter.

He’s arrogant and cruel—a man I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy—and by some twisted turn of fate, he’s my new Olympic gymnastics coach.

I’ve had to contend with gruff coaches in the past, but Erik is far worse. His stern demeanor complements a body built for intimidation, and his reprimands come from a mouth so cunning, I know it could strip me of my defenses—if I let it.

Though each of us would love to be rid of the other forever, we are bound to each other by need and necessity. I’m his rising star, his best shot at proving himself to his critics. And without a coach, I have zero chance of winning gold in Rio.

The easiest way forward would be to wave a white flag and make peace with the man I’ll be sharing close quarters with for the foreseeable future, but he is intent on war.

Fine. By. Me.

If he pushes me, I’ll push back harder. If he wants to test me, to play with my head, I’ll show him just how many boundaries I’m willing to cross. Because I know it’s not a choice between winning or warring—not if you can have them both. At the end of it all, I plan on leaving Rio with gold around my neck and his icy heart in the palm of my hand.

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way, I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things... everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors include Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I'm a comedy geek and love all things "funny". Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.
