Raised as a prototype for the Georgian Bratva's obedience drug, 221 fails to think, act, or live for himself; he's his master's perfectly-crafted killing puppet. Standing at six-foot-six, weighing two-hundred-and-fifty pounds, and unrivaled in to-the-death combat, 221 successfully secures business for the Georgian Mafiya Boss of NYC, who rules the dark world of the criminal underground. Until his enemies capture him.
Talia Tolstaia dreams to break from the heavy clutches of Bratva life. She dreams of another life--away from the stifling leash of her Russian Bratva Boss father and from the brutality of her work at The Dungeon, her criminal family's underground death-match enterprise. But when she stumbles upon her family's captive who is more monster than man, she starts to see the man underneath. A powerful, beautiful, damaged man whose heart calls to hers. But sacrifices must be made--blood for blood...life for life...souls for scarred souls...
As the standalone follow up to RAZE, Tillie Cole once again does an excellent job in portraying the harshness, ferocity and primitive nature needed to survive the gulag. Like Luca, 221’s story is of a boy whose youth was snatched away in the cruellest of ways due to jealousies and ambition. Depressing as both stories are on a whole, 221’s story touched me in a deeper way.
I identified with the tragedy in this romance, as strange as it is to say, there was a beauty in it. Talia’s position has always been one of an accessory in some ways; best friend, sister, daughter. Her underlying need to find her place and belong is a constant weighing sadness. In Zaal she finds her counterpart and wholeness. With Talia’s influence we witness the transformation from 221 to Zaal, from a kept slave to a free man. The vulnerability of this outwardly menacing man was not only touching but completely endearing for this man bred and condition to conjure nothing but fear.
The Scarred Soul series is one for me that draws on the beauty that comes from pain. Tillie Cole is an author who has the talent and ability of evoking such strong emotion from her readers. She’s able to draw you into a scene and place you in the mind’s eyes of her characters. REAP is novel that not only bled emotion from its pages but one that also gives life to hope in the darkest of places.
