Review: Breaking Nova by Jessica Sorensen

Title: Breaking Nova (Nova #1)
Author: Jessica Sorensen
Release Date: 3rd September

Rating: 2.5 star

Nova Reed used to have dreams-of becoming a famous drummer, of marrying her true love. But all of that was taken away in an instant. Now she's getting by as best she can, though sometimes that means doing things the old Nova would never do. Things that are slowly eating away at her spirit. Every day blends into the next . . . until she meets Quinton Carter. His intense, honey brown eyes instantly draw her in, and he looks just about as broken as she feels inside.

Quinton once got a second chance at life-but he doesn't want it. The tattoos on his chest are a constant reminder of what he's done, what he's lost. He's sworn to never allow happiness into his life . . . but then beautiful, sweet Nova makes him smile. He knows he's too damaged to get close to her, yet she's the only one who can make him feel alive again. Quinton will have to decide: does he deserve to start over? Or should he pay for his past forever?

2.5 stars for toxic relationship

Note: I changed my rating from 1 star to 2.5 half because after I thought about it, I saw that I didn't really considered things I liked.

I can’t believe this book was written by Jessica Sorensen, one of my favorite new adult authors. She could stab me in the back and it would hurt less. Really. Breaking Nova was not what I expected it to be. This novel totally shattered my immense love for every male character Sorensen’s ever created. When I think about Quinton and start to compare him to Micah or Kayden I feel the need to hit my head with something heavy. My terrible book monster reared his ugly head and started stomping like five year old telling at me to stop reading this epic failure. But I didn’t stop with tiny hope it could change. I need a shoulder to cry on. Can someone volunteer?

I despise writing hateful reviews, especially for a book I had great expectations. But I don’t have a choice. Why? Let me tell you exactly why.

This is a story about Nova and Quinton. Both of them are broken and damaged, which is totally fine with me, I love heartbreaking books, but this time Sorensen went a little bit too far.

Nova is nineteen years old and lost boyfriend she loved very much. London committed suicide and she doesn’t know why. He was always drowning in his sorrow, never really smiling and struggling with every day. Only drugs made him ‘barely surviving’

So one night he killed himself. From that moment Nova changed. She doesn’t know how to live anymore, how to love, trust and be happy. She wants to know why London killed himself. She also blames herself for not helping him. Completely lost and broken Nova is back home for summer break. But her house and neigborhood is the place that is strongly connected to her and London, which make her remember every painful thing.

Quinton is a druggie. He smokes weed every day and use something stronger ‘from time to time’. Smoking is his only way of dealing with death he caused in car accident a year ago. His mind and soul are pretty fucked up. He promised his dying girlfriend he won’t love anyone else as much as her. He wishes he could die with her that day, because living is his own hell.

In Breaking Nova drama is not only the size of Africa but also so overwhelming, you can’t think straight! Think every catastrophe happening on one page. Suicide, car accident, hateful parent, loss of the other one, mindless sex, drugs and MORE DRUGS! Everything is there. But where was amazing sense of humor? Where were swoonworthy moments only Sorensen could create? Where the fuck was pure healing love? Where? Because they sure weren’t in the book I was reading.

You have to understand that I expect something beautiful to blosom from ugly. Hurt has to change in love and so on. I love pink fluffy happily ever after!!

Also everyone in this novel is doing drugs. To deal with life, horrible past, to have fun, to have even more fun, to find out how it feels like, to… I think you get my point. And when I say everyone is doing it I mean it (I think the only one who didn’t is Nova’s mother). It’s like fucking advertisment for pot. This book doesn’t warn you about concequences of smoking, nope it’s almost encouraging you to try it. Nova almost begs for a joint, because she wants to find out why people why doing it. Quinton is always stoned and his friends too. And guess what? Nova’s best friend ALSO!!! Every chapter, every page has something to do with USING DRUGS.

Well, I guess I have a problem with reading about bunch of freaking JUNKIES, because this is exactly who they are. There is nothing sexy in someone addicted. There is no fun in reading about effects of getting stoned. It’s painful, uncomfortable and horrible.

This is the first book by Sorensen that lacks in love department. Quinton and Nova are not in love, their ‘relationship’ is shallow as well as toxic. I didn’t feel chemistry between them. I didn’t feel anything at all for them. Quinton could overdose and I would be happy he got what he deserved. His mistake wasn’t being a driver in car accident but dealing with it by destroying himself and everyone near him. He’s antagonist in this story.

The thing about Nova is even more complex. She’s not interested in Quinton as a new, different person. She personalize London with him. She sees sadness, brokeness in both of them. Quinton also smoke weed (London did it too), they’re artist and so on… She used Quinton for finding closure. It was pretty pathetic to watch.

The only thing that really interested me was London’s suicide. I wanted to know his reasons and well, get to understand him. I didn’t get a chance to find out, everything was so vague.

I also enjoyed beautiful style of writing and the easy way Sorensen can tell a story. As always words were deep and meaningful. The last few pages showed me Nova in totally different light that made me like her more. I'm crossing my fingers for her. I wish her the best, because she needs to find her happiness.

Overall, I am a little bit angry and disappointed in this story. I’ve never read something so toxic and destroying for both of people. I think that my issue with drugs made me bitter about some things and I suppose people who didn't care about it will have better time to focus on other sides of this novel.

    1. Hi,
Thank you for stopping by and taking time to follow my blog. Actually I'm great Sorensen fan, I've read almost every book she wrote and I've never gave them less than 4 stars. This one was such a disappointment for me. I suppose it's because of my heavy issue with drugs that were one of the biggest topics in the book. It only shows that even one of your favorite authors not always can write something for you
